This episode was really symbolic of how this entire six episode story arc felt for me. It started pretty slow - to the point that we were thirty-five minutes in before any of the "action" started, but the last five minutes were as exciting as anything that's happened on "Lost" in the past year.
In the end, I can't help but be a little disappointed. I mean, we've gotten hints about the nature and purpose of the Others, but I don't feel like we've gained the insight I was hoping for at this point in the season. Jack, Kate, and Sawyer are still "trapped" - although it seems at least Kate and Sawyer are on the brink of freedom. The rest of the Survivors don't seem any closer to saving them, or finding out what happened when the Hatch imploded. We've been hinted that Desmond has some super-power, and that Locke has found a new "mission" on the Island, but there really hasn't been much payout in any of those storylines either.
Points to Ponder:
- "Sheppard wasn't on Jacob's list". That probably makes Jacob the "he" that Ben cryptically referred to last season, as the overall leader of the Others - and probably a seriously bad dude.
- That also means that Jack isn't one of the "good ones" who were on the list of people to kidnap from the crash. He was brought to the Others' camp for no reason except to operate on Ben. If it wasn't for Ben's greed, Colleen would probably still be alive - thus the reason that Danny Pickett is so angry.
- I don't remember the exact wording, but when Ben inquired about Alex, Juliet said that they took Alex "back home" - possibly to the main Island. I'm betting wherever they "took her", that's where all the kidnapped kids from the Tail are going to be too!
- Jack is a badass. Like I said, he's quickly become the most interesting character on the show. He's taking no prisoners and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty anymore - and I like it.
- Sawyer is a badass... but with a heart of gold underneath his tough exterior! He hearts Kate and Kate hearts him!
But enough about me. Your turn for feedback, questions, etc. I'll get a full analysis up sometime this weekend.

Why didn't Kate tell Jack that they are on another Island?
"Lift up your eyes and Look North."
I'm not familiar with any maps of the Island but I assume this would mean that "Alcatraz" is off the North Shore of the Island.
If Jack was not on the original list then we are wrong about our theory that Kate and Sawyer were only captured to convince Jack to perform surgery is wrong. What is Kate and Sawyer's purpose?
The only two things I can think of is that the Others performed tests on them right after they were captured last season.
OR and the theory I like better: Whatever Kate and Sawyer were building/working on is a lot more important than we think.
OK, Ben previously made a comment about Juliet looking like Jack's ex-wife, and is it just me, or does Kevin (Kate's ex-husband) look exactly like ETHAN!!! Weird says I.
Sorry for the sloppy first paragraph above.
haha it's kinda funny that the guy above said that Kevin looked like Ethan.. because my roomate said the exact same thing.
Go Sawyer for bagging Kate. It was pretty hot. I wish I could have heard what he said when they were cuddling afterwards.. there was a Fog warning and so we heard nothing. BOO
I will look it up on You Tube.. maybe they'll have it there.
He says something to the extent of "When you said I love you before you only said that to get him to stop right?" Then Kate says nothing and kisses him and then he says "I love you too."
Brian I think Colleen still would be dead even if Jack wasn't on the list. Instead of going with Michael, Hurley, Kate and Sawyer he would've gone with Sayid, Jin, and Sun. Sun still would've been on the boat and still shot Colleen.
Aw jeez, I can't believe comparisons are being made between "that guy from Serenity" and "that guy from In The Bedroom". C'est Nate Fillion. Rent SLiTHER if you want more.
My wife complained that the show didn't "go anywhere" this episode (or these past 6), but I figure they needed a whopper of a cliffhanger to keep interest high over the next 90+ days. I won't say what they were, but 2 "foilers" were apparently released into the wild about this episode, or else they'll come to pass next time. I don't think people anticipated a two-parter, basically.
Naysayers be darned, I'm stoked for the next episode.
i was a little disappointed but thas kool...i think the entire purpose for this was to give us a taste of LOST, and then come back next season...seriously, questions need to start being answered.
the good points to me were badass jack, the "look north" for locke which i think points toward the island...and btw, u think that maybe the smoke monster put that in? i dun remember Eko scribbling on to it while he was chasin his brother...
anyways, looking forward to LOST in febuary...
"The best episode of the year!!" (per ABC) Is exactly what this episode was NOT. Not a thing happened until the last 15 minutes. I was bored for 45 minutes of a "finale" of my favorite show. I seriously hope the rest of the season gets good like it was the first two seasons, otherwise...they'll have no one to watch the fourth season.
can all the "Anonymous" posters click on other and use a name please.
the major thing that i do not understand is what the first poster has left: why didn't kate say anything about it being impossible to escape? at this point it renders jack's heroics quite useless
I was thinking all this past week two points and now a third after tonight...
1) How in the heck does BENRY have a tumor? Does the island cure others and cause things for him?
2) Why the correllation to Jack's wife? That was out of the ordinary for sure!
and after tonight
#3 What the heck good does all of Jack's efforts do for him or Kate if they are on Alcatraz? There really isn't much of a cliffhanger for us who know. So Benry dies, I will no longer have nightmares of his WICKED grin!!!
Okay, enuff of me...back to packing!
I liked it a lot! I know we didn't get many answers...and this episode even raised some new questions, but they kept me on the edge of my seat the entire hour. Looking forward to Feburary's uninterrupted continuation!
"Lift up your eyes and Look North."
Something creepy, a voice in my head told me something like that the time I saw a UFO or something.
Driving in a car at night with my sister, and something said "Look up to the north" Did so, and I saw it rise up over the mountains.
Did anyone else notice the tech error in the Kate Flashback scene. For such a great detailed show, you would figure that they wouldnt have a City of Miami Police Officer in a Miami-Dade Police Vehicle (two different departments with two different uniforms) Also if John has lived for almost 5 months on the Island...how come they cant distinguish the smoke monsters call yet...especially since he was face to face with it last season? And could someone tell me why John lost his legs? I still am not clear on that one. And if Ben said they are the good guys and they "aren't the killers." then what happened to everyone from the tail section?
I agree that the first 2/3 of this episode was paced terribly. I like Sawyer and Kate together, but that didn't need to be the focus of so much time. But it was all worth it to see Jack knock out Juliet in the OR! Awesome! I hope Ben lives, because he's been such an interesting and compelling character and we don't know yet the real dynamic of Ben vs. Juliet. So somehow Jack will decide to save him - perhaps Kate and Sawyer will find a sub or a boat that the Others use? How else will they escape Alcatraz?
Does anyone remember the story Jack told Kate on the beach? I may have to pop the pilot DVD in to refresh my memory. And I'm looking forward to theories about Jacob!
Re: Jack's story
Wasn't that when Kate said Jack seemed so unafraid and asked if he was ever scared? He then told the story of doing surgery on someone's spine and accidentally cutting the membrane that held all the nerves in. He freaked out, told himself that he could feel fear for 5 seconds, counted to 5, then calmed down and finished the surgery.
If the ones who are on Alcatraz are not cut off from the rest of the world, then there has to be a way off the island. The others who are on Alzatraz were able to get to the crash on the other island almost as soon as it happened and appeared to be victims of the crash. So they either have some way of moving between the two islands or the whole two islands thing isn't real.
I think the 'official' ending to the love triangle deserved the attention it got. And even though it was just in the last half, this episode had more action than any of the others so far. Now it feels like maybe the storyline will start to progress when the show starts back up again. One can only hope...
Even if they're on the other island, it still could be a good thing for Kate and Sawyer to escape -- they wouldn't be under surveilance, they could pick off the Others one by one, they could steal a boat/sub and get the hell out of there, they could go back and save Jack and raid the gun cabinet, etc, etc...
I loved the last 15 minutes of this episode. Great twists and action. I didnt expect at all Jacks reaction during surgery. Loved the Costa Rica reference. Pura vida Costa Rica :P
I did not care for the episode. Slow until the final 10 minutes, then it was so chaotic that it's hard to grasp... I think they went too far, I don't know what to think, and I don't feel any suspense, probably due to sensory overload.
I don't feel like we know anything more about the others from these 6 episodes... anything important anyway. We know they have houses, book clubs, hamburgers, an island and the hydra station, we know that they're working/digging for something, and we have new faces and names... but we still have no clue who they are, what they are doing there, what they are doing, etc, and they have not shown to be 'good guys'.
Tech errors: I think they goofed on the cell phones. They appeared more 2004 than earlier. I'm assuming it was earlier, and the phone booth? When was the last time you saw one of those. The timer must have been to prevent a trace, in these times, that information would be available instantly. I'm sick of the Kate flashbacks anyway. I feel like her story has been told too many times and it's getting repetative. I would like to see her killed off.
Was it implied that both Sawyer and Kate will be able to run or just Kate?
Kate didn't tell Jack that the Island is apart from main island due to extreme tension in the moment when Jack radioed her on walki talki.
I think most of can agree that Tom's idea (from post above) to kill off Kate is a no go. She is such an integral component of the show. I do agree that her story has been told enough. Can anyone provide some continuity between Kate's falshback and the current storyline? It seems disjointed to me.
I think there may be no Alcatraz. I think the survivor island and the one they're on now could be one in the same. If it isn't, our awesome duo (Kate/Sawyer) will find a way off.
The slow paced five and a half episodes were well worth the wait of the last 30 minutes last night. I was blown away. We need more intense moments like these!!!!
Any suggestions for how to fill the next 90 or so days until the show starts again?
Re: continuity between flashback and episode.
Both situations involve Kate falling in love with a man under circumstances that make it hard for her to stay with him. I think the idea is to see how Kate has been changed by her time on the island. In the past, she couldn't stay still, couldn't trust the man she married enough to tell him about her identity (until he was drugged and she was on her way out the door). Now, she won't run without Sawyer, she's had ample opportunities to try and run but hasn't taken them. If she does run, I think the implication is that Sawyer will be running with her. Perhaps they can force the Others to give them a boat, perhaps they can demand guns and imprison several of them. That actually raises a question for me. Why can't Jack and Kate converse now and demand that in the next hour all the Others go to the cages, turn in their guns, and get locked up. Sure, a few Others could hide out in the woods, but Jack knows where to find several automatic weapons (Henry's viewing booth), and having the majority of the Others locked up would certainly help their odds. He could start interogating them now. I'd ask Kate to bring everyone she could find and lock them up in the aquarium room.
My suggestion to fill the next 90 days until Lost starts up again: Watch the new show "Daybreak" for new trailers of Lost. It will be the only way ABC will get people to watch what looks like a really crappy show. Like a "Groundhog Day" on crack.
Why the heck is people so dissapointed with the show? Is it that they want everything answered in one episode and the show to be over? Geez, relax, altho its taking its time the show is top quality and you wont find anything like this anywhere. Enjoy what you get, and just have fun! Its so annoying to hear people complaining for not getting answers when they want to.
We too thought Kate "monica's" hubby looked a lot like Ethan or even Goodwin. If it was Goodwin he was w/ the tailies and was killed by Ana-lucia. If it was Ethan you'd think w/ his time w/ the main group some altercation would have taken place between the 2.
We enjoyed the episode, can't wait until Feb!
Did some checking...
Kevin was played by Nathan Fillion.
Ethan was played by William Mapother.
Goodwin was played by Brett Cullen.
There are similar features between Kevin & Ethan for TV brothers so that may work. Will have to see. Might be a streach tho.
It is interesting how the writters drop in what could be key clues very casually within dialogue....ie; Jacob. Whos is Jacob? also, what does it mean that "Jack was not on the list"? It would seem apparent that whatever master plan may exist for capturing the Lostees, Jack's inclusion was to only serve the purpose of saving Ben's life.
also, why did Ben inquire about Alex moments before going under the knife? clearly, what was implied here is that Alex is of special signifance to Ben...but how they are connected may be a key question.
For those Lost Junkees wanting to hear more, last weeks Podcast indicates we'll learn about the whereabouts of Fl #815 children and flight attendent, I believe soon after this season resumes in February.
Thanks for checking that Anne. Like I said, I thought that was one of the most interesting parts of the episode. Very lost-ish to flaunt it in our faces but never make direct reference to it.
Did Kate ever have contact with Ethan? It's been so long now since that season... Oh wait, she was definitely there when they shot him I guess... Perhaps that whole theory goes to hell. But then, Jack never made a comment about how Juliet looked like his ex... I'm just curious as to that whole part of the story. The whole "clone" bit. Seems like that movie The Island to me.
I cannot believe only one person so far has mentioned what could be one of the most important moments of the show...when Ben asked "Did Alex ask about me" before going into surgery.
Is it possible Ben is her "dad"? Not necc biological, but maybe he raised her after she was taken from Danielle.
Or, in a completely rediculous twist, what if Danielle actually was an other at some point...what if there never was an expedition that crashed there, and she never killed anyone? It's a stretch but...maybe she was an an other...Ben could be the father of Alex...and then maybe something happened that distorted Danielle's memory...disease (caused by the Dharma experiments?), brainwashing.
Haha I know it's pretty out there, but I think there's a lot more to ben asking about Alex, than we seemed to be giving it.
They are NOT on another island - they want them to think that (mind games!) so they won't run.
Just like Ben played a mind game with Jack and let him open the door on his own thinking he was escaping when Ben really wanted him to see Kate and Sawyer together - it worked - he got him to agree to the surgery.
Here is a question - I thought the others leader was a woman - remember back to when they had Walt? Where is she?
Finally, I don't even think Ben is sick and that Jack saw someone else's xrays. It's all a giant test. Ben is putting Jack to the ultimate test - knowing - from his large personal file he can't stand to lose a patient.
Finally/finally - the message for Locke from Eko's stick means something other than where to look for Kate, Jack and Sawyer as that would be to obvious.
I think Ben really does have the tumor. Jack is an expert spinal surgeon if Ben didn't have a tumor Jack would've realized it the second he cut him open.
Was anybody else hoping that ABC would pull a Janet Jackson and "accidently" show a little more of Kate?
Just a quick note -- I think the significance of Eko's stick for Locke was not just the "lift up your eyes and look north" but the fact that the way he was looking at it, it said JOHN right underneath. The message seemed to be directed to him -- http://www.thetailsection.com/s0303/LOST-s03e03-02.jpg
I think everyone is being a bit harsh about LOST not giving answers. They may not be giving actual answers but they are giving enough information that we can eliminate theories one by one.
If there is going to be 5 seasons of LOST we're still about 6 episodes away from being half way through the series. If they started giving all the answers right now the last season and a half would just turn into Gilligan's Island where the only purpose is to get off the Island.
I think the spring series will more than make up for any dull moments that this fall produced and by the time the season finale rolls around we will have forgotten what we were so mad about.
LOST and 24 are the only great T.V. shows on television right now and I hope that LOST goes on for as long as possible.
yeah, once again, dying to know why Ben asked Jack if he thought Juliette looked like his ex-wife. Any thoughts?
Ben didn't ask Jack if Juliet looked like his ex-wife, he told him she did. It was all part of the description of their plan to break him. I assumed they had picked someone who looked like his ex-wife because they thought she would be able to develop the trust so necessary to breaking someone!
Oddly, I don't really see the resemblence, and I totally don't see any resemblence between Kevin and either Ethan Rom or Goodwin.
Brian:
Could you provide a link to where you talk about your Clone/Twin theory because I always see you or other people mentioning it but I'm never able to find it. Thanks
I think one of the most important questions this episode raises is WHY DID THE OTHERS WANT KATE AND SAWYER IN THE FIRST PLACE?! If Jack was not on the original list then they were not just there to convince Jack to do the surgery.
Also I've always just assumed that the manual work that the Others have Kate and Sawyer do was just busy work with no real purpose. But when Kate told Jack what they were doing she said, "We're building something....It's big." Maybe whatever they were building is more important than we think right now. IDK but I think this question is important.
Yeah, I'm confused about why the others care about Sawyer and Kate.
And for that matter, why does Pickett want Sawyer dead so bad? Yeah, he is belligerent to the Others (who wouldn't be in that situation) and I belive he hit him on his failed escape attempt. But really, why does he bring up Collen's death when he continually tries to kill Sawyer? Sawyer didn't kill Colleen or really have much to do with it al all. If the Others would kill someone senslessly to avenge a death that's on their own hands, they DEFINITELY aren't good people.
I'd still like to see the whole Sawyer & Kate mating theory play out. It would be sweet and funny if that is why they were captured. I doubt it though, as every episode seems to make it seem like it was pointless.
Back up.
When Pickett said "Shepherd wasn't even on the list", my interpretation is that he was referring to the ORIGINAL LIST , you know, the one that the Others used to kidnap Tailers the nights after Flight 815 crashed.
The "second list" that contained Sawyer, Jack, Kate, and Hurley was used just for the purpose of getting Jack there to do the surgery. That's why Pickett was so mad - Ben was putting his life into the hands of someone who wasn't even "worthy enough" to make the original list.
If Sawyer and Kate really did have a greater purpose, he wouldn't have been inches away from killing Sawyer. They were simply there to help convince Jack to do the surgery.
My guess is that Ben told them "keep them around until Jack performs the surgery, then you can get rid of them", which explains the "I thought you said two weeks? The timetable moved up." comments this week - the timeline moved up because Jack told Ben he didn't have any more time.
The big thing here is that Ben is seemingly putting his own personal healthy over the benefit of the Others as a whole, their goals, rules, etc.
Maybe I'm the one who's looking at this backwards, but this makes much more sense to me. More on my full update this weekend!
hey Eric - regarding Ben saying to Jack that Juliette looks like Jack's ex-wife.....my quesiton is why Ben said this? Also, I clearly thought she looked very much like Jack's ex....even to the point that in the opening scence this season, when they showed Juliette in her home preparing for the book club, I thought it was a back-story and she was Jack's wife.
Re: Juliet as resembling ex-wife
I guess there are some similarities, but Juliet in particular has unique features that I don't really see it.
But in any case, I thought Ben brought it up in the contect of telling Jack that now that he has seen the x-rays the whole plan is off, they're no longer trying to break him so Ben might as well tell him. Now I did wonder if this wasn't Ben's way of trying to gain his trust, thus getting him to do the surgery. But I thought is was framed as Ben's confession of the plan that was no longer going to work because Jack saw the x-rays and was figuring out what they were trying to get him to do.
i think jacob is the guy with the patch on his eye,a.k.a. patchy...it appears that he is in a hatch on the island and has access to study the survivors so maybe he provided a list to the Others as who to get and keep for their own purposes...i don't think patchy and the Others are working together but i think they just have an arrangement to further each of their interests.
what ever happened to Jin and his wife? If there are two Islands how come Saayid, Jin and Sun never saw it when they were in the boat following Jack.
I have been reading for a while, but I dont remember anyone mentioning Jack's tattoo. Last nights episode was the clearest view I have gotten so far. Knowing our Lost writers, I am sure it means something. Any ideas??
Well, I didn't say they would kill of Kate, to me, I find Kate and Sawyer the least appealing part of the Show, Kate in particular. I can tolerate them for their integral part to the show, whatever that is. I'll give you that, without Kate, Sawyers character would fall flat.
I don't know where they're going with this. The whole thing was chaos for the last 10 minutes. It all happned at once, so it seemed disjointed. I think that's why I feel no suspense. Then again, I had to watch it live in standard def with no Tivo(long story) so no pause and rewind, and I actually had to watch comercials... ugh.
To Anonymous who said Jacob = Patchy.
Agreed with you on this for the briefest moment. But let's think about that, why would he allow himself to be in a location that could be viewed from that hatch? Even if Sayid did do his little electo-patchwork to get the picture on the screen...
I guess it's just my own imagination, but I think Jacob is off the Island. A "Hanso-esque" character if you will.
Although Patchy does intrigue me. Another Crazy French Lady wildcard to add in as the writers see fit.
"Here is a question - I thought the others leader was a woman - remember back to when they had Walt? Where is she? "
This is the same question I have. Miss Klugh has disappeared. Where is she? Who is she?
Secondly, I agree with Becca's question earlier about Sawyer and Pickett. Why does he want to kill Sawyer so desperately? It doesn't make sense.
Oh, and Jack kicks ass!!
Becca: I think you've hit it bang on. Danny Picket has been making side comments directly blaming Sawyer for Colleen's death. And like you said as far as we know Sawyer had nothing to do with it. And especially when you consider it was the Others that created the situation in which it was possible for Colleen to die in the first place. So is Picket just being psycho or will they explain his over reactive violence towards Sawyer. Don't get me wrong, the man's wife was shot and killed; you're gonna have some anger issues. And I hope it's for a reason something more than just playing the heavy on him so that Sawyer would be in this pressure love/mating situation with Kate. Sort of forcing (manipulating their natural emotions) them into a loving situation. So is Kate now pregnant with Sawyer? Is Sawyer's purpose over?
I just don't know? Again Picket was surprised to see Kate was out of her cage so I doubt the Kate/Sawyer hook-up was planned by the Others. And still Picket was hell bent on what seemed like total pre-meditated murder (all behind Ben's Back - literally). But then there are the parallels to Alex and her dead (is he dead?) boyfriend.
Lost theories always seem to have an obvious counter arguement and then the story opens up into something else completely.
Also I wonder, with Ben's comments before he went under what exactly he was refering too. Do you think he'll get trippy visions while under Jacks knife?
Confounding episode.
So many questions without answers. Underlying the entire show is the something. What is the lurking variable?
I guess we will just have to wait.
The whole scene with Alex was odd as well as Benry asking after her.
Jack was incredible this episode - I should of remembered that Jack always has a plan...

@gina,
the tattoos of Jack are the original tattoos of Matt Fox, I read he had them for years. The real meaning is private, he once said in an interview, but the writers want to integrate them in the show with a special story, as it was said in a podcast, I believe.
Anyway, it´s great that Jack is given more room to show a darker side, as he did a little when he, for example, had a poker game with Sawyer a while ago. And there you have it again: it´s all about light and darkness...
Again, in prior episode, do you think it is plausible, from Ben's perspective, that Juliette offered Jack to watch a movie while she talked (or pleaded) to him about saving Ben? Wouldn't this seem strange, curious and maybe suspicious to Ben and without rationale?
On this last episode, Ben's comment "see you on the other side" can take on several meanings. Any thoughts? Also, him asking Jack if he gets scared before doing surgery.....wasn't Jack's fear of surgery shared with Kate back on the beach shortly after the plane crash that now Jack is asking her to repeat to him once she is safe on the walkie talkie?
My first impression was that Jacob was a higher up in the Others, not a mole. Maybe the "him" that Benry mentioned.
That was my first reaction. As far as I know no one other than Claire was taken from the fuselage people so I don't know where this list would have come from or what it would be for.
Jack told Kate that the island is a way for everyone to have a clean slate and start over a new life and she did not need to confess anything to him.
I have more thoughts on everything you have said Brian...
Kate
Even with Sawyer and Kate's new cage knowledge of each other I am unconvinced that she has chosen him as a heartmate. If she hearted Sawyer for real she would of told him she loved him when he asked. Let's face it - Kate may not be able to truly love anyone yet. She must forgive herself.
Kate's painful reaction to kissing Jack last season was because she got close to remembering that real love once again. Ouch! That is Kate's MO the whole way - get to real love and taco night then BAM - feel undeserving and self loathing and run.
When Jack asks Kate "did they hurt you?" her reaction was more than I expected from just what we have seen from rock bashing and a fish biscuit diet. Maybe something did happen to her on the dress day. It was Jack she trusted to reveal that emotion to and that happened spontaneously.
Jack
Jack like Kate also has to forgive himself for driving his wife away and his Dad over the edge and he needs to get over whatever happened to him with the tattoos. He must also deal with the mind crap his Dad laid on him as a child of course. Sawyer's retelling of meeting his Dad helped bring closure there, for sure.
Sawyer
He may get to know the ladies but will he ever find true love? He has a child back home and if he doesn't die I'd like to see them reunited because that affected him more than anything I have seen so far. Sawyer knows Kate does not love him but they do share a deep bond of understanding about what drives people to a life on the run.
Well I don't know what got me on that topic when I am still obsessed with the underlying equation. Sigh.
- Webuffy
The backstory on Kate actually is pretty interesting and subtly revealing. This is a women who apparently wants to settle down but can't. She clearly appeared happy when married....taco night and all. The purpose of the backstory, IMO, was to show Kate's character (she's not a bad person but does bad things) and to show what she really wants. As pointed out earlier on this website, whereby she fled from her husband....she wouldn't leave Sawyer behind - nor is she quick to agree to leave w/o Jack now.
One question though....what was the point in her doing a pregnancy test in her flashback?
>>>>>But when Kate told Jack what they were doing she said, "We're building something....It's big." Maybe whatever they were building is more important than we think right now.<<<<<
I think they are building a big statue and the feet will have four toes.
About the bible verse on the stick, it says "Lift up your eyese and look north", then John 3:05.
Only problem is, that is not the verse found at John 3:5. That verse is: "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."
I'm assuming that there is deeper meaning to that apparent inconsistency.
Sorry, one more thought -- when Kate and Sawyer got it on, my immediate thought was: THAT is why they were chosen. They need a baby/child, and the ones that they have taken, including Aaron, haven't panned out. There was also the reference to the pregnancy test in Kate's flashback.
The down side to this theory, of course, is that the Others couldn't be sure to get a pregnancy with just one attempt, so killing off Sawyer so soon would be a big risk.
Am I the only one who noticed (both in this episode and the last one) that Sayid seems to be in two places at the same time? Last time we saw him, he was with Sun and Jin on the other side of the island, trying to get to the Others' camp. And since the boat was stolen, he would be stranded up there with a very long walk back. But suddenly he's back at the main camp with Locke and crew, and no sign of Sun and Jin anywhere.
"1) How in the heck does BENRY have a tumor? Does the island cure others and cause things for him?
2) Why the correllation to Jack's wife? That was out of the ordinary for sure!"
These have been covered - the tumor may just no be healed by this place (see Rose and Bernard's flashback) and Juliet looking like Sarah is a way to coerce Jack by subconscious feelings of nostalgia etc.
"The others who are on Alzatraz were able to get to the crash on the other island almost as soon as it happened and appeared to be victims of the crash."
They weren't on Alcatraz at the time, they were on the main island - you may remember ben saying to Goodwin "You can be there in (what was it, an hour?) if you run." RUN. I'm pretty sure Goodwin isn't Jesus.
"what ever happened to Jin and his wife? If there are two Islands how come Saayid, Jin and Sun never saw it when they were in the boat following Jack."
We don't know how big the island is, maybe they just haven't been to that part yet. I for one am convinced that there ARE 2 islands - hence Ben's "Get me that boat" and references to the sub - how the hell else do you think they got to the boat without alerting Sayid and Jin?
"I have been reading for a while, but I dont remember anyone mentioning Jack's tattoo. Last nights episode was the clearest view I have gotten so far. Knowing our Lost writers, I am sure it means something. Any ideas??"
I'm fairly sure that the producers have said his tattoos are relevant, but we still don't know why yet - anyone care to take a stab at an interpretation?
"I guess it's just my own imagination, but I think Jacob is off the Island. A "Hanso-esque" character if you will."
Aren't the cameras in the pearl only hooked up to the other hatches?
"Am I the only one who noticed (both in this episode and the last one) that Sayid seems to be in two places at the same time? Last time we saw him, he was with Sun and Jin on the other side of the island, trying to get to the Others' camp. And since the boat was stolen, he would be stranded up there with a very long walk back. But suddenly he's back at the main camp with Locke and crew, and no sign of Sun and Jin anywhere."
So he walked back, no biggie - alright, we've not really seen Sun/Jin, but hey, guess they're taking a back seat right now. A long walk yes, but how long did it take Sawyer, Jack, Michael etc. to walk there in the first place? Less than a day iirc - so Sayid probably had just made it back last episode, and the walking went on while Locke and Charlie saved Eko.
I realise all I'm doing atm is picking holes is other people's theories without volunteering one of my own, but I don't have one, and if I can pick one apart, chances are it's wrong and we can look elsewhere...
Ok, just a hunch, and even though it's a little too convenient for real life my bet is that Kate and Sawyer run anyway (even though they think they can't get off the island) and get to the shore. They magically find Desmond's boat, which has pretty much been unattended since Colleen's death. At the same time, Locke and Sayid go to the North shore and see Kate and Sawyer coming toward the island from the other island. Of course, the main problem is that Jack is left there, and now Kate, Sawyer, Locke, and Sayid need to go and get Jack out of there before he finishes the surgery and they kill him for pulling that stunt (even if he saves Ben, they would still be angry).
FYI, Locke discovers that, on Eko's stick, it says GEN 13:14 "LIFT UP YOUR EYES AND LOOK NORTH", with JOHN 3:05 carved directly below. John 3:05 is a quote of Jesus: "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit." Kate and Sawyer need Locke to get off Alcatraz.
I don't think Alex is Ben's daughter. Maybe she was a mentor or something, but who would put their daughter out somewhere where they don't know where she is? And wouldn't she want to see her dad having this surgery? Wouldn't she have direct access to talk to Ben instead of throwing rocks with a slingshot to get his attention? Also Ben and Rousseau getting it on is too weird, they're totally not compatible-looking! I think Ben is just worried of her getting in the way. As long as she's not bothering them or their plans, they don't care.
In response to ppl's comments: there weren't technical errors in Kate's flashback that I noticed... we don't see those phone booths now because the flashbacks happened years ago... and anyway, they still do exist in places and I've seen them. Those cell phones existed in the year of the crash, they weren't even color in the front which is what the new ones look like. Ethan = Not Cute and Kevin = Cute, that's the difference. Kate and Sawyer are in love, she's just being cute... she kissed Jack before and was ashamed and never did it again, you don't do that to someone you love. I think she sees Jack now as a close friend, not lover. Jack cares about saving Sawyer because he likes Kate and wants her to be happy... even thought he didn't mention Sawyer, I don't think it's necessary, after seeing the video he knows it's a given. And about City of Miami isn't Miami-Dade? Maybe he got promoted or moved to another department. They don't have to explain every unimportant thing.
Anyway, that's my rant. I hope the next part gives us some good info on the Others. By the way, I'll be in Hawaii for my honeymoon in March, so if anyone has any suggestions about seeing LOST being filmed or where they hang out, message me through my profile, thanks!!

If you remember correctly Michael did not take Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley to the beach...they were supposed to meet Sayid at the beach but Michael took them to an open field of grass surrounded by bushes and Jack Kate Sawyer and Hurley were ambushed by the Others.
"They weren't on Alcatraz at the time, they were on the main island - you may remember ben saying to Goodwin "You can be there in (what was it, an hour?) if you run." RUN. I'm pretty sure Goodwin isn't Jesus."
Now I may be completely making this up; but either in the second or third episode of this season didnt Juliet say to Jack that he the room he was being kept in was under water? And then at the end of that episode all the water rushed in and they almost drowned. Am I making all of this up or did it really happen cuz I can't remember lol.
If I'm not making that up maybe they have an underwater tunnel connecting the two islands. That may be kind of a stretch but so are some of the other theories posted here so I thought I would throw it out there.
RE: Alcatraz and Ben's comments to Goodwin.
Remember, we haven't seen much of the area that Jack, Sawyer and Kate are being kept. We don't actually know if they're being held in the same location as we saw The Others in Ep. 1 of season 3.
I'm guessing the cages and underwater hatch are in a totally different location than the wonderful Shyamalan-esque Village looking community from the season premiere.
Does anyone else have more thoughts/comments on the submarine that The Others have?
JUST FOR FUN...
Hey all, saw this was on Dave tonight and in case you missed it...

They have very detailed descriptions of where most scenes are shot, how to get to them and so on. It will even tell you if sets are on private or public property. I have family there and it is quite a big deal. They said (I love this!) It is bigger than when they filmed Magnum PI!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
"If you remember correctly Michael did not take Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley to the beach...they were supposed to meet Sayid at the beach but Michael took them to an open field of grass surrounded by bushes and Jack Kate Sawyer and Hurley were ambushed by the Others."
True, but it still didn't take more than one day for Sayid Jin and Sun to sail to where they were going, and presuming everything in that episode happens in the same day (which I think is a fair assumption) that means it took a day or less for them to walk to the open area, get shot and then get carried to the pier,

Submarine. They probably shipped off the main island not ong after the plane crashed. Or maybe not - after all, they hung around long enough to take Claire to the Staff hatch, so I guess at least some of them stayed for a while. But the point is after kidnapping Jake, Kate and Sawyer they DID jump in the sub and take them to island 2 where they put Sawyer in a cage, Kate in a shower, and Jack (apparently) in an underwater section of the hatch.
By the way, I'm liking this idea about "Sheppard wasn't on the list" as being the original list, i.e. the "good" ones, (not sure who wrote that), but I guess it's kinda hard to make that call right now.
OK... Think "The Truman Show" and magnify it by huge proportions! That's the answer to everything.
Kidding of course, but what if the series finale someday throws us a weird curve like that.
My first thought about the list was also back to the original list of people. The thick file on Jack makes me wonder did they do some type of profile on each person to determine who would be the most amendable to becoming part of their group, therefore why the kids were part of the group taken. Obviously Jack doesn't seem easily converted hence Picketts concern about him operating when he wasn't on the list.
My thoughts on the comments above:
Jack is under a TANK of water, where they have sealife they're experimenting on (such as sharks). I've gotten that impression, although I can't remember from what.
That means he's on the Alcatraz island, but underground under the water tank of the Hydra (like Sea World's underground areas).
The Hydra is on another island (Alcatraz), but the Others' village is on the main island where the survivors are. That's how Ethan and Goodwin got to the Survivors in an hour. I think an underwater tunnel or submarine would actually would take longer than an hour to get to the main island, if they were living on Alcatraz. Also it would be dangerous to hold the Survivors captive near their village, since if they escaped they could hurt people in the Others' village.
The Others are working on the Alcatraz island to build/accomplish something, so that's why Ben wanted Desmond's boat... so the Survivors couldn't reach Alcatraz. Of course, Kate and Sawyer will need Desmond's boat to get back to their home island. And Alex was put back "home" as well... where the Others' Village and the Survivors are.
By the way, to HEATHER'S BRAIN: thanks for the great links!
In those last ten minutes, we got some indications that Ben may actually be the "good guy" among the Others:
1) He asked if Alex had inquired about him and Juliet said no. Juliet is lying, and keeping Alex and Ben apart - perhaps Ben is the only one Alex feels she can trust, or the one she thinks is most likely to help her.
2) The moment Ben loses consciousness, Pickett heads off to kill Sawyer, as if Ben is the one who exerts a civilizing influence.
Jack's power to hold Ben's life in the balance is only going to be useful to the extent that the Others want Ben to stay alive: if there is a rival faction (as Juliet's lie would suggest), then it's only a matter of time before they mobilize to take over, which will probably be a bad thing.
The references to fear suggest that this will be a turning point: since the beginning of the season they've been running scared, and now they're (finally!) starting to turn and fight.
Hey guys...I don't recall this Jacob guy...or even him being mentioned...someone want to enlighten me? or post a link to a picture if there is one.
I too noticed too, but kept forgetting to mention... when did Sayid get back to camp? With no boat? Wouldn't this be a story line? They were pretty far up the coast.
I assumed the timelines were parallel... Show the three on the others island... then show what happened after the implosion(or whatever..)
Lets see.. Locke wakes up... not immediately, but then again Jack Kate and Sawyer had to get to their cages too.
Locke gets a vision from the island and saves echo.
The big question is... how many days(I don't remember) did they tell Sayid that Echo had been like this? How many days had it been in "every man for himself" that they said it had been since the sky turned purple?
There may be an answer, but I would think that the arrival of Sayid and co would have been a big deal.
I don't think that they are on another island... Karl and Alex seem to be encouraging them to run.
Again, if the island is 30-40 acres, that's not much, you couldn't travel far without knowing it. That's about the same size as the 'pentagon'.. and that's a building.
No, I don't think that's the case.
Hey anon...you made some intersting points about Ben possibly being the good guy after all. It had occurred to me that IF (and it is still a BIG if to me) Juliet was being truthful in the VIDEO she showed Jack, we might be in for a big...SO WHAT! from them when we return to see Jack holding a scalpal -is that how you spell that?- and them going we don't care if Ben dies...
ON ANOTHER NOTE
There are so many little 'who cares' details, that I refuse to worry about them. The discrepencies in props such as Locke's driver's license and gun papers for example, or how long did it take Sayid to get back to camp...blah blah blah. I care very little about those compared to the subtle clues given in side bar comments, like sky going purple and being blind and no comms. Did Alex ask about me? (a comment I missed actually!) and she looks a lot like your wife stuff. All these little moments make me jump through hoops to find answers! The others I just give up on! The ARG this summer had us in circles on goofs like that and it was A HEADACHE!!!!!
ONE OTHER THING
In regards to Jack's tatoos...I did extensive research on this for days (another wild goose chase in the land of details!) and found, as someone has already stated, that they belong to Matthew Fox and he has been very quiet about them. There are theories about Party of Five days and so on, but he really won't say too much. As for the show LOST, the producers may or MAY NOT use them in the character of Jack. They have left that door open. If you want details, go to lostpedia and look for info on Jack's Tattoos. It is all there. Even the translation of the poem! It all means nothing to us, but again I got caught up in those tiny details and it consumed a whole weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope that helps a little on that, of course it is just my opinion and if you want to lose sleep over little things like all that, it is your perogative! I will not stop you :)
Hey HEATHER'S BRAIN, in a recent Podcast the writers recently said they're going to explain Jack's tattoos in the 2nd part of this season, so it looks like they are going to write it in for sure...
What was the significance, in Kate's backstory, to show her taking a pregnancy test prior to ditching her husband?
"What was the significance, in Kate's backstory, to show her taking a pregnancy test prior to ditching her husband?"
Not 100% sure on that one, found that a little strange myself... the only answer I have so far was that she got freaked out when she thought she was pregnant because at the time she still knew in her heart she couldn't settle doen and she was going to run again.
That said, it seemed kinda out of place there... the dialogue was a little weird too ("I almost had a baby! ME!") wha? Not making much sense of this right now, not sure how important this one is.
Kate getting pregnant made her afraid that if she continued this married life and had the baby, she would risk getting caught one day and ruining the lives of her husband and child. That's why she left him after the pregnancy test. I guess that earlier she assumed she could get away with it all, until she felt the seriousness of the pregnancy.
Also I am beginning to like the idea of the comment above that Ben may be the good guy here, and Juliet is not good. That would be a good twist that sometimes things aren't what they seem.
However, next episode is Juliet's flashback... have we ever had a flashback of someone not good?
I rewatched the first episode for you all, stef in particular. The story was:
Kate: "You don't seem afraid at all. I don't understand that."
Jack: "Well, fear's sort of an odd thing. When I was in residency, my first solo procedure was a spinal surgery on a 16 year old kid, a girl. And at the end, after 13 hours, I was closing her up, and I... I accidentally ripped her dural sack... shredded the base of the spine where all the nerves come together, membranes thin as tissue, and it ripped open, nerves just spilled out of her like angel hair pasta, spinal fluid flowing out of her, and the terror was just so crazy... so real... and i knew i had to deal with it... so I just made a choice. I'd let the fear in, let it take over, let it do its thing, but only for 5 seconds; that's all I was going to give it, so I started to count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... and it was gone. I went back to work, sewed her up, and she was fine."
Kate: "If that had been me, I would have run for the door."
Jack: "No, I don't think that's true. You're not running now."
Please forgive any slight errors, since I manually transcribed that while rewinding several times.
AWESOME CHRIS! I think this is very important...think about the last few lines between them...not necessarily the story itself!
I also think in that story he is saying right now to Kate, you are letting fear have too much! Take it back and THEN RUN!
By the way, MELODRAMA, the pod casts don't really do it for me. I see them as a very dim light at the end of the tunnel that turns out to be a train about to run you over! Not neccesarily good news if you get what I am saying. Whenever I hear them give a 'clue' it ends up being a trick or play on words. They didn't LIE per say, but it wasn't at all what they were saying.
Just my two cents, and that is about all it is worth! ;)
I understand now why so many people have skipped out on LOST. Here we are, 6 episodes into Season 3 and it already feels like I'm waiting for Season 4, with 10 questions per 1 answer at the end of each episode. The loss of Eko will come back to bite you. Remember Melrose Place, after they killed off all of the interesting characters? Canceled. Tonight I was eagerly anticipating "Heroes" and it hit me that I used to feel that way about LOST a long time ago. I am still a fan, but I'm begging the producers to wrap some things up before introducing new issues or they will find themselves going the way of "Surface" and "Invasion". This long layoff doesn't help and I don't care about Daybreak at all. The Others are not that interesting to me, and we hardly see the rest of the survivors anymore, the people who made this show great. Please bring back the LOST we all know and love and do it soon. You've already lost half your viewing audience since Season 1 and it's only going downhill.
jack e. is right, Lost is not the same show it used to be. Season 1 was the best so far, some stuff from season 2 but season 3 so far is just plain boring. One or 2 exciting moments but thats all. Dont get me wrong, Im still their number 1 fan, but I cant stop being worried about the show getting cancelled. We barely see characters from season 1, lots of them already dead. I want the show back on action. Please do it asap. Episode 6 was NOT the best episode of the year at all.
new post up this weekend?
Over promised and under delivered.
:)
Is it still Saturday or what? :P
"And I think herein lies most people’s complaints about the finale. The thing is, this show has been about mystery all along and slowly revealing answers. If you want storylines neatly tied up in an hour, watch CSI. The show has never been about this – and never will be."
-Brian June 2005 on the Season 1 Finale of LOST.
I think that same quote can be applied here too.
Andi - good call, I'm totally a Lost producer pre-Season Three start, hyping it up and then not coming through. Sadly, there's no chance of me getting a full analysis up in the next week or so due to my whirlwhind travels over the next two weeks to New Orleans, Seattle, and Portland.
But rest assured, it's coming (along with my usual "end of year" posts about the best TV / music of the year).
Until then...
Here's a quick and essentially useless thought...
Anyone else think Tom is in love with Ben?
senor feesh, I had this thought coming up, too! Well, it does not necessarily mean, that Ben feels the same way, too, but Tom really seems to care a lot about Ben, and makes the most loyal impression, compared to other "Others" around him.
Brian, we miss your analysis, but we´ll wait patiently ;-)...
Anybody else thinking, that we´re not done with Kate & Jack yet? Somehow it feels, that Kate & Sawyer were acting out some pressure and giving each other some comfort in this not so comfortable place, but real love? I have my doubts...
HOTTEST episode ever!
