"Cabin Fever" Instant Reactions!

Brian's Numeric Review: 75%

That's about the best review I can muster without resorting to expletives. This episode had a number of huge, mind-blowing reveals, but only gave away about 75% of each, leaving out just enough out to leave me completely and utterly confused. What do I mean?

1. We learned that John Locke has been "chosen" by the Island since his birth - but we didn't learn why.

2. We saw Richard Alpert (!) administer really weird tests to a five year old John Locke that the episode made no effort to explain, yet it was clear there were mountains of symbolism and hidden meaning in each of the objects presented to him.

3. We learned that there is something really weird going on with Claire - but are no closer to learning if she's still alive or dead.

4. We learned that Christian Shephard isn't Jacob, but is BFFs enough with him to speak for Jacob - but we didn't learn why the dead Christian Shephard is appearing so much on the Island in the first place.

5. Thankfully, we learned that the Horace Goodspeed encounter turned out to be a dream - really the best possible situation to keep Lost from turning into Ghost Island... and that he was stuck in some sort of time loop on the Island, as if his spirit was a prisoner on the Island.

6. We learned that Abaddon planted the seed in John Locke's head to go on the Walkabout in the first place... which is odd considering that Abaddon seems to be working for Widmore - not Ben / Team Island, based on his appearance in earlier episodes. Plus, his comment of "and the next time you see me, you owe me one" really makes it seem like he's bound to pop up on the Island to crown Locke the new leader of the Others, doesn't it? Even though we saw in Hurley's flashforward that he doesn't have any idea of what's going on with the Island anymore? Confusion.

7. We learned that the key to saving the Island is to "move it", even though I haven't the slightest notion of what that actually means.

8. We didn't learn why Hurley was needed to come along for the journey to the Cabin, but that Locke needed him enough to trick him into thinking that he wanted to go.

9. We saw the Freighter Doctor alive and well - but after Omar received the message that the Doctor's body washed up on the Island, he slit his throat, throwing us into such a complicated time loop that I'm going to need my full whiteboard at work tomorrrow to figure it out... and that's not even getting to the cut on his face.

10. Finally, from next week's episode preview, we learned that somehow, with all this madness going on, all these storylines are going to result in the rescue of the Oceanic Six starting with next week's episode. How they're going to pull that off is beyond me.

Like I said, there were a ton of reveals about what is going on that hint at some of the biggest mysteries ever on Lost... but we only received a partial view of each (75% by my estimation) - not enough to make it easy to figure everything out - but enough to get our minds started down the path.

I'm sure to have many more rambling thoughts over the next few days here: http://facethewoods.com/lost/index.php?topic=309.0

...and then will get to the full episode analysis as soon as my brain allows.

Brian - as for Alpert's test with the objects... that's the way that the Dalai Lama is traditionally identified. It's a way to test reincarnation, as a young child is asked to consider a set of random objects and identify which had belonged to him "before." Alpert's test was straight out of Tibetan tradition - nicely fitting with the variety of Buddhist themes we've seen before. I'll find some more details and post them on the Board.

I must say...for the serious lack of Kate in little clothing this episode, it rocked pretty hard anyway!

Nice find Stef!

Abbadon works for Widmore. Widmore somehow found out Locke was going to one day lead the others, and likely is keeping tabs on him.

Widmore knows the island is in the Pacific. Having Abbadon plant the Walkabout seed in John's head gets him on a flight (to and from) Australia.

Widmore knew that plane was going to end up on the island!

Man, I knew I should have been a Buddhist! It would have totally paid off in my understanding of Lost.

So that would explain why the taking of the knife "turned Alpert off" - since a knife would signify violence instead of benevolence?

I'm dig a little deeper on this.

Good stuff, Stef!

I knew my religion major would payoff someday! :-)

This goes along with a previous post but Abbadon working for Widmore, hanging out with Locke, seems to indicate that Widmore saw some sort of opportunity within Locke to take power away from Ben, remember the whole how many times have they played the game lines, he was looking for a chance and saw it in Locke...maybe Widmore got access to Alpert's Mittlos files?

But then, how Widmore knew or planned 815 to crash is beyond me.

Or maybe Abbadon was playing for the other team at some point and switched off to Widmore's side.

Regarding Stef's good observation: there is a scene in Martin Scorsese's 'Kundun' that is pretty much identical to Alpert's test. In the film a man puts several objects in front of a small boy and asks him to choose the ones that belong to him. If I remember correctly the boy chooses a pair of glasses. The small boy, of course, turns out to be the Dalai Lama. Vodalus

Brian you're either reading spoilers for your episode previews, or you're a genius man (my money's on the latter).

But hey, as for your point #8, Locke didn't try to trick Hurley into going, I think he really meant it when he was giving him the option to leave. Locke thought he needed him at first just to find the cabin.

Anonymous said...

Did the guy with the glasses in Locke's teenager flashback mention "Mittleworks Laboratories"? If so, then this is the initial tie in to the online game from a couple years back, referring to Thomas Mittlework, who took over the Hanso Foundation.

tobiasly said...

@jack e: no, he said Mittelos, which is the lab where Juliet was recruited to ("Not in Portland").

And, unsurprisingly, Lostpedia has already been updated with tonight's reference:

" and that's not even getting to the cut on his face."

the doctor had the cut on his face before they slit his throat and threw him overboard.

I never took the whole "the island won't let you die" thing said to Michael too seriously, but did we just get confirmation of that in this episode?

I mean, Keamy's gun malfuncions as he tries to kill Michael, and did Ben also confirm it to Hurley when he was talking about shooting Locke?
He said something like (and I'm paraphrasing) "I should have figured... but I wasn't thinking."

What do you guys think?

TradeBait said...

About that test. My understanding of the final result was that Alpert wanted Locke to choose specific items as stated above. The final choice came down to IMO the knife or comic. Choosing the knife relates to him later in life denying who he is, a "scientist" like the counselor said. He wants to be a "superhero" so he choose the knife and didn't realize his destiny until this episode. This is likely very obvious to you guys but typing it helps me out.

My cable went out & I missed the last 7 minutes! I was so annoyed. So I'll watch it tomorrow online but I think your review was pretty on target Brian. We got bits of info without any full understanding. I loved how they handled the Horace thing, I wasn't thrilled with the idea of zombies walking around the island.

Don't forget the picture that the boy Locke drew, that looked like Smokey to me, with a person in the picture, I don't know if that was meant to be himself, or if that was smokey attacking someone.

Yeah this episode was a bit much of a tease for me. I really enjoy when they tackle a couple questions at a time, instead of just trying to confuse the hell out of all the viewers. I mean Claire lying there looking totally creepy? Completely unnecessary. Of course, I will be totally wrong in the next episode. Man this show is so damn good but frustrating.

what about the garb Kemme was connecting to his body? What the heck was that? If i were to guess, it could be some sort of gadgetry to defy Smokie or the magnetic bubble effect of traveling to and from the island.

As for Albert's scenes with younger Locke, it could be that Albert was time traveling and trying to insure Locke's "destiny" on #815 is upheld. This epsidode, in general, seemed to have more to do with destiny than most other episodes especially Ben's dialogue. As for Ben, I didn't like seeing the character in such a weakened, vulnerable position...more fun seeing him, at his best, being sinister and canniving thinking circles around everyone.

All told, mind blowing episode but way too many questions were raised.

Anonymous said...

also, the folder Kemme pulled from the safe had a DHARMA cover on it. Kemme said, i think, that Ben's whereabouts would be spelled out in the folder. Do i have that right?

About moving the island - I remember a couple years back reading Damon Lindelof's response to a fan theory, hinting that the island may not actually be fixed in place. I wonder if they planned this from the very beginning?

Anonymous said...

what about the "coincidence" that Ben and Locke's mothers' first name are both Emily?

Anonymous said...

I don't think they are going to get rescued next week. I'm assuming that's part of a flash-forward. Especially since Hurly is still so far away from the rest.

Eric Antoine Scuccimarra said...

Yes, the test does have to do with the Dalai Lama and is straight out of Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

My question is who they thought Locke was the reincarnation of. People don't seem to die on the island so that made that confused.

Stef said...

Eric - I think Jacob's actually dead, and Alpert is looking for his next incarnation. My bet is on Aaron.

Anonymous said...

Well it seems John Locke has been choosing to be THE HUNTER regardless of what every one else in the world, including Alpert, tell him he can't do.

and interesting thing that should be noted that i caught, is that If you notice, Mr. Abaddon, actually seemed to be the only person whoever pushed John Locke in the direction of being the man he wanted to be, the only person who gave John Locke hope.

Unknown said...

As to Alpert's test. I think that island knew Locke was "special" much like a young Skywalker, and Alpert was testing Locke to see how he was going to use his gifts, for good or evil. The island is like the Jedi and when Locke chose the knife it signified violence and more like the dark side.

Abaddon, as his name suggests, signifies evil, and he is trying to get Locke to join him and his side. Locke has the power to decide and must choose, which is inferred by the high school teacher's comments. How does one deal with power, it is a struggle between doing what's right and what feel goods. "With great power, comes great responsibility." Ok, enough with the parallels.

Keamy's arm band: They said Keamy was going to torch the whole island, and I am sure he has explosives that were being loaded into the heli. Between that and his comment to the Capt. that "he doesn't want to do that" when he pointed a gun at him, made me thing the arm band was some sort of pressure trigger rigged to the explosives. If something happens to Keamy (i.e. it may monitor pulse rate) it will automatically detonate the explosive.

Anonymous said...

it was interesting how Mr. Abadon pushed Locke to the head of the stair case causing tension that he was to push Locke down the staircase.

i wonder if Mr Abadon will emerge, if not as a central figure, more of a key character (similar to Richard Albert) in this emerging story?

Does anyone think that last night showed that Mr Abadon's interests towards Locke are in conflict with Richard's?

Unknown said...

Christian (Jacob's BFF, I like that!) said that Aaron is right where he is supposed to be? So was Aaron supposed to leave the Island, or did the island not expect a rescue to occur and take Aaron away?

smacky said...

Things are definitely moving in place for their rescue. Sayid is off alone on the boat to get "the fist batch." Maybe he'll get the first batch and it will be the ones who are the Oceanic Six. I do wonder how that will work. I can't imagine Jack would get on the boat instead of Juliet. Something is going to stop her from being rescued. The look on her face last night when the copter flew over. She still wants off the island very badly. I hope she isn't killed.

The ship must pretty much just have Desmond and Michael left on it, with the captain dead and the commandos back on the island. But we know Michael and Desmond are not part of the Oceanic six. I wonder if they slip back into society in secret or remain "lost." Maybe Michael will fix the engine.

I also don't want Frank to die!

And finally, future episodes could be very interesting if Frank and the original three researchers who dropped in by helicopter become trapped on the island with the others, once the commando invasion is dealt with and the Oceanic Six are gone.

...and oh yeah. Both Locke and Ben's mothers share the same name, "Emily"... meaning "Hardworking, Flatterer, Industrious or Rival"

What about the fact that last time Hurkey saw the "cabin," He saw Christian Shepard up close in the window? If Christian is a part of the island, why does he appear to Claire and not Jack?

Just wanted to point out that Alpert had short hair when Locke was born in the late 50s.

When did Alpert meet young Ben? The early 70s?

So when the "Hostiles" raided Dharma, their clothes and hair were for show, a tactic the Others would later use.

Hi Guys! I read this blog and comments all the time but don't usually post haha. Anyway, I'm so confused!!! haha Does anyone know why the pilot threw out the phone over the island (how sneaky that the other ppL on the helicopter didn't see it)? Was it just so the ppL on the Island know where the helicopter ppL are?

Anyway, talk about super duper creepy Claire, man that part totally freaked me out. Does this mean that Christian's dead body is "living" as Jacob's BFF? Remember we haven't found the body yet right?

If Locke succeeds in moving the island, that explains why in the future the Oceanic 6 cannot go back even if they are eager to return - especially Jack. All the "stealth mechanisms" of the island have been brought down (the underwater jamming, the hatch's electro-magnetic field) and the Widmore team knows the exact bearing to get to the current position of the island thanks to Daniel Faraday. The question though: will they move the island in space or in time - or maybe both... We saw that at some point after the rescue Ben will be able to fix or restore the teleportation system. Is it only restored one way, to exit the Island? Or maybe Ben has no reason to return since he no longer has a purpose on the island, after Locke has been "crowned" as the chosen one? In the Ben / Said flashforwards, why are they not going after Abbadon? Abbadon does not seem to be in hiding, since he "stalks" Hurley. Wow, so many new questions every week :-)

The 2009 and 2010 editions of ABC's "Lost" will be 17 hours each -- not 16 as previously planned, says The Hollywood Reporter.

ABC has added two hours to the show's production plan because the WGA strike knocked three hours out of the current season. To partly compensate, the network recently added an additional hour to Part 2 of the season finale that airs May 29.

All told, the changes will wrap up the show with the same number of episodes that producers and ABC negotiated last year.

"We were supposed to do 16-16-16," "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof said. "But we ended up doing 14 this season, so we owe two."

For the upcoming season finale, Lindelof promised a more action-driven cliffhanger instead of the mind-bending flash-forward time shift that stunned fans last season.

"The finale this year will not be as tricky as last year," he said. "Hopefully, this year it's a little bit more of a straightforward action-adventure narrative. But the ending of the episode will hopefully engage and intrigue people looking forward to the next season of the show."

Let's not put too much hope in the O6 leaving the island in next week's episode. That scene could be in someone's flash forward. They could skip right over how they got rescued and just go right to getting off the helicopter as the beginning of someone's flash forward, and we will still have questions about how they got off the island!

Long time reader, firsttime poster:

Take the 'both Ben and Locke's mom have the same name' a step further: are they brothers? We know the Swoozy Kurtz character appeared as John's mom to start the con for his kidney. Did we ever see actual confirmation that she was truly his mom, or was it a set up by his father? My bet is that they are brothers.

I was going to say, about the doctor's stitches. If the corpse they found was killed while the cut was still unhealed, then it cannot be the same doctor on whom the cut would later heal. Not to mention that he had no stitches when he was killed in this episode. So it has to be more than time travel--it has to be multiple realities.
Great.

Anonymous said...

I think the preview was for the whole finale. They won't leave next episode, but maybe by mid-Part 2.

Also, little has been said about the phone being dropped. Jack has the idea that the helicopter wants them to follow. If Sayid is coming to the beach, how will that work?

Anonymous said...

So, if Team Island is going to somehow *move* the island, maybe something like this will happen... Sayid returns to the island on his raft and can fit only 5 people on it for his first shuttle run back to the freighter. The 5 that go, plus Sayid, are of course the Oceanic 6. He then hops back in the raft to return to the island for another pickup, but lo and behold... the island, and everyone on it, has been moved, so Sayid can't find it. He then has no choice but to return to the freightor. From there, our 6 somehow end up getting rescued. This would mean that Jin, Sawyer, Juliette, et al are all still alive on the island, but without any reasonable chance of rescue. UNLESS some of the O6 can figure out how to access Ben's time/space travel abilities, which could be the focus of the final season.

Sorry for the long speculative ramble. I quite certain I have no idea what I'm talking about.

wow, what an insane episode.

i think the size of the episode is hard for everyone to instantly process, but the most important thing to me was Jacob's Cabin and who was inside of Jacob's Cabin:

Christian and CLAIRE.

This happening supports two of my prior theories:

1. Claire is already dead. The clues are all there. What's the most significant and powerful relationship between two humans? The one between a mother and her child. For Claire to be 100% fine with leaving her baby in the middle of the jungle shows that something extraordinary is going on with her. Let alone to leave Aaron for the man (Christian) who she asked to leave her alone/get out of her life in earlier episodes when she was a teenager. And did you see her expression/body language when she was in the Cabin? She looked like she was in a hot tub! She gave off a very dreamy/comfortable vibe that could be related to someone accepting their death.

2. Jacob is directly related to Christian/Claire/Jack. I can't explain the details of this theory yet, but the fact that Christian is able to speak on the behalf of Jacob is incredibly supportive. The way Claire and Christian were sitting in this hard-to-find-Cabin, it was almost like they were apart of a family. I don't know. Brian: please explain why it was Christian and Claire in the cabin. Why not anyone else?

Anonymous said...

I love Hurley....I laughed so hard when Locke woke him up and Hurley says...Mallamars!!!!
When Jack grabbed the phone that Frank dropped from the helicopter and said that "We are suppossed to find them", I thought NOOOOOOOOO..stay away!!!!
IMO I think Claire is dead...With the way Myles acted before she "disappeared" and the way she acted in the cabin...There is no way if she were alive that she would sit so calmly not worrying about her son.
I am curious as to why Micheal isnt part of the Oceanic 6. I am assuming that he is not part of the 6 because although he got off the Island previously, he doesnt make it off the boat this time.
And I have a question that I asked in last weeks comments but never got a response so I am hoping someone, anyone, can give me their assumption...
In last weeked eppi....Kate and Jack were together (which I LOVED)...my question is...Was this flashforward taking place before or after the eppi where Jack was going to jump off the bridge and commit suicide?? Because of the way Jack was falling back into the pills and booze it kinda leads me to believe that the Jack and Kates hookup happens before the bridge jumper scene...I could be wrong...Thoughts anyone??

Opening with that Buddy Holly song? "Every day - it's a'gettin' closer, goin' faster than a roller coaster... Every day - it's a'gettin' faster... Every day seems a little longer..." Brilliant!

Anonymous said...

Celeste - it seems very clear that this was before the period of Jack's suicide attempt. Following the suicide attempt, Jack no longer held his position at the hospital.

Anonymous said...

I agree, the Jack and Kate episode took place before the Season Finale of 3. Jack starts becoming delirious and halucinating and taking the pills which explains how he tells kate hes been flying every weekend trying to get back to the island. Kate says "I need to get back to him" which we now know is Aaron. ALSO noone has mentioned, now that we know more about the whole story, any theories as to who is in the coffin we see in the season finale of 3? Maybe Michael? Kate wants nothing to do with the person and Jack feels bad which I believe means it had to be a crash survivor they both knew.

Christian and Jacob are "special" but ARE NOT friends and ARE NOT working together. One is good and one is bad. I'm thinking Jacob is Ben's "boss" and Christian is Widmores "boss".

okay according to lostpedia Locke is 48 years old...The Dharma Purge apparently happened 12 years ago...Richard Alpert was around when locke was born...While locke was growing up, Alpert was using the Mittelos cover up as a way 2 try 2 get Locke...i thought Alpert didnt gain accessablity to the Dharma Initiative resources such as the submarine till after the purge...Obviously there r other ways off the island...so he had ways off the island b4 gaining control of the initiative resources...but y the sharp lookin suit??? i mean when Ben met Richard 4 the 1st time, richard looked dirty like he had never cleaned himself up b4...was he doing those types of trips b4 he met Ben...some major time issues here that have 2 do wit the island.....any1 get wat im tryin 2 say...lol...

Just want to add some to discussion: the picture of Richard Francis Burton (or Sir Richard Burton) on Locke's highschool locker.

And, like told before, I don't think that Locke manipulated Hugo. Ben just assumed he did, and he was denying it when he said "I'm not you".

Waiting for the analysis.

i've been making the rounds to lost blogs and nobody's mentioning desmond's vision that if charlie dies, claire goes up in a helicopter. Claire must still be alive for that to happen, right? It will happen, right?

Remember the film "time after time" where H.G. Wells stalks Jack the Ripper across time? Cabin Fever got me thinking that two or more groups (or individuals) vying for domination are playing a game of chess across time to seize the future of the island.

Anonymous said...

it is an interesting point someone makes that Desmond predicts that Claire will be on the hellicopter. to me, it seems certain that she was killed in the explosion. if so, could this be some sort of continuity or writting lapse? i would think it to be impossible for there NOT to be screw-ups in writting with a story-arc such as Claire's.

i wonder what you all (and Brian) think about Alpert initially "rejecting" young Locke only to again try to recruit him when Locke becomes a teen. In other words, after testing Locke, Alpert is disapointed and says Locke is not ready. Later, when Locke is in high school, Alpert tries to sign Locke up for Mitello's Science Camp thru his nerdy teacher. What changed during those years for Alpert to feel Locke was "ready"?

I like your theory. About the chess game, are there any "rules" that could have been broken by Widmore when Alex died? I'm thinking Alex and Penny being queens...?

Anonymous said...

Maybe the drawing of the smoke monster by little Locke means that he was killed by it in his last life in the island. Or he saw it killing someone.
Either way, a memory from his past life.
Maybe Locke was on the Black Rock, as we postulate that Richard and Widmore were.

I like the idea that Horace might be Jacob as well. After all, he built "Jacob's" cabin.

Also, did anyone else notice and/or think there's any significance to the fact that Christian was dressed differently? This is the first time, on the island, or in Jack's visions, that we've seen him in anything except the suit and tennis shoes. Any thoughts?

Anonymous said...

About Desmond's vision of Claire getting into a helicoptor:

I would assume the vision will only come true if everything in his vision happened right. If anything was changed, the outcome changed, right? At least that's what seemed to happen with all his previous visions. So, do we know if his vision was fully realized??

I don't think Christian and Jacob are BFF. I think Jacob/Ben are on one side and Whitmore/Christian are on another side. I think Whitmore wants to move the island so it can be his again.

Also, Ben clearly hasn't passed his point of significance since in flashforwards we see him playing a very active role.

I am truly convinced John & Ben are half Brothers from the same mother. John's mother had him when she was very young and then she ran away, met Bens dad and had Ben.
Although,I do not know who the actress or actresses who played the mothers I do not think that is significant anyway. I think the fact that they both had the same name is too coincidental. Out of a billion names in the world, why would the writers choose the same name for both John and Bens mother.
The age of the men and the time line doesn't seem so far fetched either.
I love the show more than the next person however, it is really starting to have a Sci-fi feel to it. I was hoping it wouldn't.
Still love it though.

Anonymous said...

First, John and Ben do not have the same mother. Ben's mother died shortly after giving birth to him. He is older than Locke. So it's impossible. Also - we saw both women and they looked totally different. All they have in common are initials (Emily Linus and Emily Locke).

Second -- I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere yet. Did anyone notice the Kahana looked different? In past episodes, the name on the side of the ship looked really old and crumbly and peely -- kind of unreadable. In this episode, it was crisp and clear - brand new looking. Something truly funky is going on!

Anonymous said...

I also thought that Ben and Locke might be brothers. I had no idea Ben was older than Locke. I must of missed or forgot something. I also find it weird how like the above posting said out of all of the names in the world, why would the writers choose Ben and Locke's mom to have the same name? Could there be something to that?
Happy Mother's Day!!!

Dave said...

My guess is that frank and sayid will each take one trip of people (probably six between them) away from the island, and then Locke will succeed in moving the island, leaving everyone else stranded. Of course, that doesn't account for what will happen to the commandos, but maybe smokey will return just in time...

Of course! (smacks self in the forehead) Ben and Locke are obviously half brothers.... way too much of a coincidence with the names and the timeline is perfect!

Everytime I read a new theory on here I wonder why I didn't come up with it myself. Actually, not everytime. Only when I read the good ones.

How many more epis do we have this season?

This blog is seriously the best Lost blog out there. I have a terribly boring job and I spend a silly amount of time Lost-ing about online. This is a great one. Great analysis, greatunderstanding of the big picture. Thank you thank thank you for using your imagination :)

Also, just a thought...if the Island can give John his legs back and zap Rose's cancer couldn't it simply have brought Christian back to life? And he has just had his own experiences on the Island, seperate to everyone else. If there was ever to be a Christian Shephard flashback, I have a feeling it would solve a LOT!

Steve said...

Brian,

That is the best theory.... very good, I feel confiden that you're on the right track. It makes sense!
Ben and Widemore were together and revolted. Perhaps widemore things he "IS" the Jacon sucessor which is why he said "i know what you are". And yes, this explains why ben can't get back to the island, and yes, him being in the coffin in 2007 certainly would explain the islands efforts to get the 6 back to the island!

Also it was suggested, I think in an interview with Cuse, that he hinted that Alpert may be the equivelent of the Sera Lama, the guy who is to find the next Dali Lama. And I'll wager that Locke is that person, and Aaron is next in line.

Now the Dali Lama is selected by finding out who he was reincarnated into. John couldn't possibly be THE Island master if he's alive and Aaron has been born. Maybe John is NOT the one, but he's the successor to Ben... and Aaron is the real reincanation of Jacob or whomever?

Anonymous said...

My guess is that the 6 are found 'floating' by someone other that the frieghter people.
But who is left on the freighter?
If the helecopter and the soldiers end up ON the island when it's moved, they can't get back, the captain, doctore, and half the others are gone. That leaves Michael, with a broken leg, and whomever DOES return... floating in a boad out in the ocean with no engines or radio communication.
