"What They Died For" Instant Reactions!

Brian's Two Word Review: Finally, but...

A lot finally happened in this episode that we've been anxiously awaiting for most of the season (if not longer)... but the payoff didn't exactly live up to the hype in a lot of cases. Still, it's pretty clear that we are moving full steam ahead, and I'm pretty pumped for the Lost-a-palooza on Sunday night. I know a lot of people were complaining about the show for the past week, but I think it's shaping up to be a pretty fantastic finale - if nothing else, this episode gave us a hint of how the final episode is going to feel. Epic. Powerful. Final.

So what happened?

Across the Sea. We finally understand why the writers chose to show "Across the Sea" so late in the game - there was a lot in this episode that directly referenced that episode... although give the Lost fans a little credit - we probably would have remembered it even if it happened two months ago, after all, most of us still remember minute details of things that happened five years ago on the show. Still, it makes that episode a little more meaningful in the grand scheme of things, which should appease some of the people so unhappy with it.

Jacob. I also finally understand why they writers had to wait so long for Jacob to finally explain his plan to the Candidates in person - but it's been pretty obvious for the entire season that Jack was the only real Candidate, wasn't it? He was the one who was suddenly talking about "destiny" and "letting go" and "believing in the Island". That's what you call nailing the job interview right there. But having said that, couldn't Jacob have given this speech earlier in the season, and then have a few episodes of the Candidates reacting to this monumental decision in trying to figure out if they can trust him, if any of them want to do it, and what it would mean? Even if Jack would eventually make the right decision, wouldn't it have been nice to see him think about the consequences of his decisions (more than the two seconds between him asking "how long do I have to do this job?" and drinking the water)? Since so much of the season has seemed to be lacking an overall focus, it seems like this storyline could have been a good way to gain some traction.

Speaking of Jacob - was this the last we'll ever see of him? Apparently the only reason that we were seeing images of him on the Island was because Ilana gathered his ashes from the fire, keeping him from fully burning away... although when Ilana gathered those ashes, the fire was already out - so it's not like they were going to burn away anyways. It seems as though his brief two minute speech were the only instructions he was going to give Jack and Co - now it's on them to figure out what to do with them. But you can't blame him, at least he gave more instructions to them than he received from The Woman when she made him the new Protector of the Island.

Candidates. In regards to the Candidates themselves, we finally got an explanation for WHY Jacob brought all these people to the Island in the first place, and it's something we've noted for quite some time - the lives of all of these people were crappy before the Island. They needed the Island as much as it needed them... but this is pretty crappy for all the happy, good people on Oceanic 815 who died unnecessarily in the process, isn't it?

We also confirmed the reason that Kate was no longer a Candidate - once she "became a mother", she found her purpose, she had someone to care for, someone who needed her as much as she needed them. She no longer needed the Island. This also seems to establish that Jin was the Kwon Candidate, not Sun - since she also had a child. However, Sun and Jin are another great example of Jacob's flawed logic. Since they fell in love and had each other after arriving on the Island, shouldn't this have eliminated both from being Candidates long ago?

It's also pretty funny that as much as we fans of Lost have eliminated Kate from the running of being the new Protector of the Island, Jacob laughs at us and says "it's just a line of chalk on the wall - if you still want the job, it's yours!" Maybe we shouldn't have been obsessing over all the names this season. I think anyone left on the Island is now a possible Candidate... although those numbers are getting pretty thin.

Death. After two years, countless theories, and a ton of buildup, we FINALLY got the confrontation between Widmore and Benjamin Linus that we've all been waiting for... and it ended without any explanation of their history or "the rules" between the two of them. I have to admit, it was pretty sweet that Ben FINALLY got his revenge on Widmore for killing Alex - but the slaughter of both Zoe and Widmore just seemed like the writers didn't have any other use for them - and their purpose was pretty much just to bring Desmond to the Island.

Note: Widmore also claims that Jacob is the one who visited him and told him what to do. One, that would have been a pretty awesome scene to show earlier this season, rather than just hearing about it after the fact. Two, this adds some more blood on Jacob's hands - since he basically led Widmore to the slaughter of SmokeLocke.

In other shocking news - was that the quick and dirty death of Richard Alpert, the guy who couldn't kill himself if he tried earlier this season is suddenly swept away by Smokey and dies off camera? Logic would tell you that this is crazy talk, and he'll most certainly show up again - perhaps with Frank (come on Frank, I was hoping you were going to wash up on shore in the beginning of the episode!), and Miles (who conveniently ran off, setting the stage for him to play some huge role in the finale) - but if not, that was a super crappy way for him to go.

As for Zoe, it's interesting that SmokeLocke said "if she's not going to talk to me, she's useless" - maybe we're supposed to take the instructions of Dogen literally. If you let SmokeLocke talk to you, he has some power of manipulation over you, and you can't kill him. If you don't let him talk to you, you have the power over him to kill him. But if this is the case, what character is left that hasn't talked to him, who can kill him in the end? Or is it just a case of Zoe being a worthless character whose time was up (my vote)?

Benjamin Linus. So... did Ben just do a professional-wrestling-style bad guy turn, or is he manipulating SmokeLocke to eventually save the day? I'm really hoping for the later, since the past few seasons have really shown Ben growing into a sympathetic character on the show. I can forgive his murder of Charles Widmore (they had a pretty long-standing grudge, and payback's a bitch), but if Ben suddenly becomes SmokeLocke's right-hand man who tries to murder the Candidates, it would be pretty illogical... and where is Claire in all this? Left on Hydra Island, all alone, again? Man, no wonder she has abandonment issues.

The Island. As many predicted, Desmond is the "wild card", invincible to the electromagnetic properties on the Island, capable of pulling another "fail safe" maneuver to prevent SmokeLocke from leaving... but apparently SmokeLocke can also use this to destroy the Island? I'm not sure of the logic here, but it seems like he now has to kill the remaining Candidates AND stop Desmond before he can leave. I can't help but think that "destroying the Island" = "sinking the Island", which is exactly what we saw in the Flash Sideways. Does that mean that the Flash Sideways actually represent what happens if SmokeLocke wins, and the series could potentially end with a "choose your own adventure" ending where Reality #1 = our Survivors defeating SmokeLocke and Reality #2 = SmokeLocke winning? Then it's up to the viewer to determine which is really the "happy ending"? Seems kinda lame, but that's the direction I'm heading in right now.

Like I said in the beginning, things are finally moving - but I can't help but wonder how much more enjoyable this season might have been if some of these things had happened earlier to give the audience (and characters) a little more time to think about them, digest them, and theorize about them. As it is, we've got four days before the finale and we're just now getting an idea of where the action is heading. It would have been nice to have this momentum slowly building all season instead of going 0 to 60 in the last moments.

But I digress. This was a great episode of Lost, and there's plenty to discuss. I'm going to try and do a brief analysis (if possible) and a quick episode preview for "The End" (maybe) - but like I said, that's a lot to do in the next four days while I'm out of town.

I will say this - thank you very much for all the nice comments in the past few Blog posts. It's nice to know that people do appreciate the time and effort I put into the Blog, and I'm glad that I've been able to enhance your Lost experience over the years. Someone also suggested now is a good time to do a final "Lost... and Gone Forever Census" - which we've done a few times in the past with always shocking results. So if you want to take part, just post the city / state / country that you're reading from in the Comments Section. I'll tally up the votes after the finale.

For now, discuss!

I respectfully disagree with the "but" in your two-word review. I was as doubtful as any after the last episode but this one absolutely saved it for me. It was powerful, it was clear and it was satisfying, which is a tough combination to nail with the penultimate episode of a long running series (especially one that has created such obsessive fans as us). I believe that the finale will be slightly open-ended as you suggest, but I also believe that it will be a success and that the "radio silence" that Damon and Carlton will enter after the finale is not due to their fear of a lostie uprising. Thanks for the blog Brian, highly entertaining and always a pleasure to read.

I just wanted to say that agree with Brendan 100 percent (he said what I was going to say before I had a chance to say it).

It hasn't been clear from early in season six that it was always going to be Jack. It's been clear from the VERY START that it was always going to be Jack.

The first sixty seconds of episode 1 season 1 is all the evidence you need of that.

look at all the comment love for brian! =) you've earned it a hundred times over!

exciting episode, there was some great stuff here. stoked about the finale, but also sad that such a great story will be over.

here's my wish list of answers for the finale:

- if the numbers are nothing more than a fascination that jacob had, then how was hurley cursed?

- how were walt and aaron special?

- what or who caused all the pregnant women on the island to die before giving birth? and why?

- who is eloise hawking really? how did she come to know so much about time and space?

- what did widmore really want with the island?

- what's the story behind jacob's cabin and the ash?

- was the woman really the smoke monster? did the man in black become the smoke monster, or did he just take on his form?

- what were the rules and the loophole governing the relationship between jacob and the man in black?

- i'm also hoping that frank, richard and miles are all still alive and play a significant role in the finale.

- i'm also hoping that individually, ben, richard and desmond's storylines all have the epic conclusions they deserve!

what about the rest of you? what are you hoping to see in the finale? what burning questions must be answered for you to be satisfied?

I don't really understand why someone would want the job of protecting the island forever. The only thing I'd want to do is to get the hell out of there. But Jack drank from the cup and what happened, happened, right? So now he's the protector. What a crappy job. We can only wait for Smokey to die now.

Also, I'm disappointed with the campfire scene with Jacob. It was very anti-climatic... and just very plain. I was hoping for something more.

Anyway, thanks for all these analysis all throughout these years. They're the first thing I come to when I finish an episode (I'm from Spain so I get the episodes a couple of hours after you do, and your Instant Reactions are fresh and ready for me to read).

I don't think Flocke ever wanted to leave the island. After killing his brother and surviving for that many centuries, what he wants now is an around-the-world Contiki tour? Wanting to leave was the cover story he used to bond with the Lostaways, but what he's always been trying to do, I think, is to die. And I think that Jacob is trying to help him - trying to make up for having imposed a fate worse than death on him. Both the Woman and Jacob seemed to accept death as a deliverance, and now Jacob is trying to return the favour. Jacob tells Widmore to bring Desmond back to the island, and it turns out that Desmond (as "failsafe") is exactly what Flocke needs to destroy the island/himself. Maybe the Flash Sideways is what happens if the Lostaways, Jacob, and Flocke all succeed in that mutual goal.

Brian - your blog has vastly imporved my Lost experience - helping me to sort through the chaos and confusion that fills my head after each episode. :) Your posts easily trump any other Lost-related material I've encountered on the internet, and honestly, once I found your blog---I just stopped looking for other sources of analysis. Here's to hoping you continue the blog in any manner you'd like.

Though I'd like Ben to find redemption in the end, I definitely got a thrill out of seeing him returning to his old cold and calculating self. I'm thinking Desmond's visit to Ben is going to be very important--as it could potentinally allow Reality #1 Ben to gain some insight and compassion from Reality #2 Ben. If this even makes sense. And yeah, the Sideways has been a little overly vague and at times seemingly pointless--but I really think the payoff will provide the final game-changing moment we've been thirsting for... but enough wondering, I'm just gonna kick back and enjoy the last few days with a new episode on the horizon. It's been a hell of a ride.

When it comes down to it, as much as I want to know everything, all I really want to know are two things, and I'm pretty sure one of them is going to be answered:

1) What did the numbers mean?
2) What did everyone have to die for?

If they answer those two things, I will be happy, though there are other things I'll always wonder about.

The espisode was good, but the show doesn't feel very organic this season. Lot's of box ticking.

Worried about Hurley now. He's no longer important as a plot device. The same goes for Miles.

Still hoping to see Lapidus & Richard before we finish up.

I'm trying to ignore the fact that most of the characters didn't ask other characters pretty crucial detailed questions during this seasons many treks.

Allana was pointless. That the survivors, Richard and Ben didn't force answers out of her is unbelievable. Nobody asked questions of Ben, who had the ability to summon the monster or Dougan who knew more than Ben. Hurley could have asked Jacob or any other number of dead characters for answers.

I'm able to enjoy this season only by doing the opposite of what I did every other season - not asking questions. Lost, for all of its promise, is a flawed show. It will rank as one of my favourite shows of all time, but it could have been much more had the writers made good on their claims. Not answering questions is one thing, contradicting past events and having characters act irrationally for the sake of plot is quite another.

After reading through all the comments I think people are asking for too many answers. The only "must have" answers, in my humble opinion, are:

The numbers? They made such a big deal out of them for such a long time, please don't tell me they were just toying with us.

Walt? They really left us hanging here. I don't need some detailed explanation of why he was "special"... just mentioning him would be nice.

The rules? I don't need a bullet point list just tell me how they came to be and how strictly they need to be followed and penalties?

As of right now it seems to me that the rules are probably the only thing I have a chance of getting closure on. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to satisfied with an amazing series. :)

"After the finale, a post-finale special of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, titled Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost, will air at 12:05 a.m, showing three alternate endings.[13] Lindelof and Cuse have stated that they shot only one ending for the finale. It is likely the other three are produced by Jimmy Kimmel Live![14] An ABC source confirmed that the DVD and Blu-ray release of season 6 will feature twenty minutes of additional scenes, some of which will have answers to questions, cut from the storyline due to running time.[15]"

Anyone else think Mile's role will be that he stumbles accross "Adam and Eve" in the jungle and because of his ability to listen to what the dead have to say he learns from Mother and MIB exactly what has to happen to defeat the Smoke Monster? Redemption for two tortured souls . . .?

(can't take credit for this, my wife came up with it but I think it is spot on!)

Thank you Steve, ditto. Enjoyed & looked forward to yours and so many others comments over the years. You hit the hammer on the nail Steve. Like so many have said, you run to Brian’s Blog before Lost, after Lost and then again after re-watching Lost two, three or more times. Brian’s writing and the umbrella of his bloggery always seemed to be the perfect read & quickly became the only source for extra Lost necessary.

I suggest watching the Lost Final at least twice. The first time just to take it in (…and then breath), the second to just enjoy it.

Cheers.

What is the "magic shiny place" anyways? The Woman said it was the thing all men have inside of them and that they always want more... What do people want?? More power, more knowledge, more time? Maybe it's the source of all these things. For example, more time... well, if you spin a FDW through the glowy stuff, you get to travel through time. More knowledge... obviously drinking the wine/water gives you all kinds of knowledge, just check out the look on Jacob's face and later Jack's face when they drink the wine/water. Another example is what happens to Desmond when he gets hit with the electro-magnetic stuff... he suddenly gets a lot more knowledge and his conscious can travel through time to alternate realities (FSW). More time/health... the magic of the island cures people and holds the key to making people immortal like The Woman, Jacob, MIB and Richard. That's all powerful stuff, no wonder Widmore wants the island for himself.

I really hope the last 2-1/2 hours includes when the statue was built. I love the idea of an Egyptian-Dharma-ville existing way back when... I mean, there would have to be a lot of Egyptians on the island to support the creation of that big statue! And it ties in with what we know about the heart of the island... it's about life, death, rebirth. Well, that statue represents creating life, and what are Egyptians obsessed with... death and rebirth into the afterlife. Where did they get all their information??? The island. ;D

I think we're all forgetting something important... there's a big stack of C4 on the island that has to be used, remember the stuff from Ben's secret closet's secret closet? ;D I'm thinking that Jack, as island protector, is going to ask Desmond, because of his special ability, to take a C4 bomb into the "shiny magic light" and sink the island while the Smoke Monster is still stuck there. I think in the Lost universe, there can only be one timeline, and if multiple timelines are somehow created, the universe just keeps trying to course-correct until they all converge back into one. I think if our crew wins, they'll sink the island, trapping the Smoke Monster there, and everyone will revert to their FSW lives, which you have to admit are very happily ever after! Ben hooking up with CFL and being a Dad to Alex. Jack having a good relationship with his son. So many examples! I think Jack's ex-wife is going to be Juliette, and that Jack will meet Kate in that dress and Sawyer will hook up with Juliette at the concert. Like someone else said, that's gonna be one heck of a concert! I don't know why, but I think it's going to be important that all the island people are together in one place in the FSW.

Okay, maybe that's all down-right crazy, but food for thought! It does seem like the FSW, which exists without the meddling of Jacob, is a better place... and maybe I'm wrong, but isn't the island underwater in the FSW? What happened, happened, right?

Denise said...

I actually feel really bad for the MIB... he finds out from his Real Mother that they didn't come from this island and that there's a lot more "Across the Sea" and it seems like a totally normal and rational response that he wants to go home. And then there's grown-up Jacob who gets to gallivant "Across the Sea" all the time to give away pens or buy lunchboxes or whatever! It's just so unfair. And Jacob isn't exactly a good guy... think about all the people that had to die from the Black Rock, the Oceanic flight, the Ajira flight, etc., just so he could prove something to his brother and conduct some job interviews. Really... he was traveling back and forth all the time... wasn't there a way to bring candidates to the island without killing dozens, maybe hundreds, of people?? (This makes me think that the final reality will be the FSW, so that Jacob is off the hook for all those deaths.) I do really like the theory that The Woman was really a combination of Jacob and the MIB, and she was responsible as a kind of Smoke Monster for killing all those people and filling in the well where the FDW was.

Lost has definitely been frustrating to watch. I'm like many people, I want answers! But after watching "Across the Sea" I've pretty much accepted that we aren't going to get a ton of answers. I do think it's going to come together... at least I hope so. I would really, really hate to be Rambaldi-ed again like with Alias!!! I keep trying to remember that I've seen a lot of good movies that explain everything from start to finish in about 2 hours... there's enough time for the final episode of Lost to be awesome, I hope!!!

I have enjoyed your blog and analyses so much over the years! You truly are one of the best LOST bloggers on Internet with all your personal touch and funny style. :)

I would like to thank you with all my heart for all of the work you've done. This blog has taken my overall LOST experience from better to best.
And,as much as I understand that it seems unlikely, I hope to see you writing about another TV show in the future.

Thanks again for all, and much love from Istanbul, Turkey.

interesting.. the way that I interpreted the episode was that the island was the real purgatory and it was there that they worked out their issues. The sideverse is what happened because they "won" and worked out their issues with Jack as the lynchpin/shepherd, and they also flew off the island. Their memories coming back was a "gift" of sorts. Hurley and Desmond had to make sure to "connect" all of them together in the sideverse in order to create a linearity to the past/present sideverse timeline, and their memories were then restored so they may go on with happy lives. Their lives were altered in a positive way..we all saw what would have happened when they got off the island before, or they had not gone through the "growing process" the island gave them. Anyway, there is much more that I could write but it looks like no one else interpreted things that way, so what the hell do I know? :)
