Official "There's No Place Like Home, Parts Two and Three" Instant Reactions!

Brian's One Word Hyphenated Review: Near-perfection.

That my friends, was one of the greatest two hours of Lost ever. Perhaps the "twist" at the end wasn't as mind-blowing as last season (it wasn't - maybe nothing else you see for the rest of your life will be), but minute for minute, that was a nearly perfect two hours of Lost. Throughout the episodes, I kept thinking to myself how I couldn't come up with any way to improve the storylines from what Damon and Carlton presented (besides for the turning of the dial to "move the Island" - a little weird... and I'd be tempted to put Penny on the Island - but I digress).

Easily the most action packed episode we've ever had, this felt more like an intense action movie than the normal deliberate, thinking-man's pace of a typical Lost episode. Yet it still delivered on all promises laid out from the end of last season all the way through this season.

The highlights:

Charlotte. So she's been to the Island before... and was born there. Is she the love child of hippie Others pre-Ben that could actually leave the Island? Was she a scientist there that accidentally traveled in space and time off the Island and has since been trying to get back? And what happened to Faraday when the Island disappeared? He was somewhere in between the helicopter and the Island - did he get sucked in with it (there were water ripples around afterwards), or is he lost and gone forever?

Locke. After spending the whole episode feeling cocky about calling Ben being in the coffin at the end for the past year, the episode "twist" revealed the coffin dweller to be none other than John Locke. Food for thought - if John Locke has always been seen as a sort of "savior" or "prophet" to the Island... does this mean that he dies but is "reborn" three days later when the Oceanic Six return to the Island? Talk about fulfilling prophecies and proving you are truly a miracle!

Ben. He lives! The past season has seemingly been leading us down the path of a Benjamin Linus death, but I have to admit I was pretty happy to see Ben survive through the finale. It seems as though he will serve as the "leader" in getting everyone grouped back together and back to the Island next season (Sayid seems to be doing some of the work for him already by gathering up Hurley). But how? He mentions that he has "some ideas", which doesn't sound too concrete. And why does the Island require EVERYONE to come back together?

Michael. He dies! But props to Hurley for lying to Walt about his dad still being alive. It's the stand-up thing to do. Walt did mention getting a visit from Jeremy Bentham (Locke) prior to his death, which seems to set the stage for next season to feature the return of Walt, as one of the Survivors required to make the return trip to the Island.

Jin. He dies! Or does he? I was holding out hope that he might have survived the explosion and be floating in the water - but with the Island disappearing, he would have had nowhere to go to find salvation. Sadly, I think he's gone. RIP Jinny.

Sun. Her visit with Widmore was quite intriguing. Is Widmore or Jack the other person that she blames for the death of Jin? If she blames Jack, could she responsible for "setting up" Locke - allowing Widmore to kill him and stage it as a suicide? Much to ponder here - but there is definitely more to Sun than meets the eye.

Desmond. I cannot believe we got a Desmond and Penny reunion! I was seriously freaking out after the helicopter took off from the Freighter right before the explosion because it was almost as if the camera was intentionally not showing him for the next two minutes - but luckily, he survived and made it back to Penny. True love does exist! However, given Ben's comments about "everyone" needing to return to the Island - does that include Desmond, who vowed to "never set foot on the Island again" and to "never leave Penny's side again"? Me thinks so!

Island. Another big question is - with the Island "moved" (which should have protected it), and all the Freightors dead (which is why the Island needed to be moved in the first place - which brings up the question of why Ben went through with the move at all after they were all dead), what is this terrible force that is ruining the Island that forces Locke to come begging for the other Survivors to return? Perhaps Ben was right when he said "moving the Island was dangerous" - did it move back so far back in the past that the Others must fight with the hieroglyphic-making cavemen natives of the Island who first discovered its awesome power? Or way into the future where they are battling robots and aliens? Maybe this is how we're going to finally get our reveal about the "history of the Island"... by living through it!

Okay - I need bed for now. But I'll get some analysis up soon. For now, discuss!

Also - did you catch the commerical for Octogon Global Recruiting? Is this the new Lost ARG? Or just an advertisement for Comic-Con in July?

Loved this episode! Too much to digest, I'll have to do it in bits and pieces... over the next EIGHT months!

Is Claire dead?

Is Charlotte Ben's daughter?

I was shocked by the Desmond / Penny reunion, as I thought we'd have to wait another 2 years for it!

Since the mean old ocean stole Sawyer's shirt, will he be shirtless for the rest of the series?

Brian, I think that Sun blames Ben for Jin's death. If she some how found out about Ben killing Keamy, which in turn blew up the boat, she would clearly blame Ben. It would also explain her meeting with Widmore because they both now have the same enemy. If this is the route it goes, it would clearly make Jack convincing Sun to follow Ben's plans and go back to the island much more interesting. My two cents.

Great episode.

I thought Charlotte might actually be Ben's little girlfriend who made him that doll ... or, since Miles talked to her about it, a ghost. Maybe both ...

Why do you figure the O6 call Locke Bentham, even to the point of one telling another "Don't say his [real] name?" Why wouldn't they just call him Locke? Is Bentham Locke's evil twin?

Here's what I think is in store for season five....

"Present time" will be off island starting with Jack and Ben's meeting in the funeral parlor....We will have "flashes" back to the island showing the "horrible" things that happened that Locke told Jack about a month before his death.

Hobnail_Boot said...

Brian -

1) Ben had to move the island because Widmore found it.

2) Sun blames Jack; go back and listen to him at the very end.

Wow! Great episode! I was so tense the entire time! Just a couple of comments:

Both John Locke and Jeremy Bentham are the names of European philosophers. I've always wondered why they gave Locke his name...

Also, did anyone else think it was totally creepy that Hurley was playing chess with Mr. Eko?

Locke in the coffin. Somehow he gets off the island, but the only way it seems to do that is if you move it yourself? Perhaps a new threat will approach the island and Locke will be forced to move the island this time.

I love love love Desmond! I am so happy he is alive!!! And that seen with Penny! So cute!

DC said...

They couldnt put Penny on the island because Ben can never go back there...Ben knows that so it would make his efforts to find and kill her 100% futile, which isn't a very "ben" thing to do.

Just a thought.

So glad to hear more of the old Sawyer, with his calling Kate "freckles" again and my favorite, his line to Jack: "So what's the plan, Sundance?"

Anonymous said...

I think Ben is the other person Sun blames for Jin's death. That's why she teamed up with Widmore.

Anonymous said...

I think Charlotte is Ben's daughter with his childhood sweetheart. They must have left the island at some point.

Anonymous said...

Don't forget Kenny Rogers....OMG I love Sawyer!!! I thought for sure he was going to be one of the dead ones. I am sooo happy.

Excellent Finale!!! Intense 2 hours of Lost! The only bad thing is waking up with a "lost hangover"! Might have to call in sick.

No more freckles!

As soon as Sawyer jumped out of the chopper, we saw two close ups of Kate's face - sans freckles!

-- lost and back again

Another question Brian -- how did Locke die? It was stated in his obit that he committed suicide but the O6 implied this was untrue. And...if Locke too is returned to the Island, is he resurrected? Wow....maybe the best 2 hrs of TV I can remember seeing EVER! Plus, did anyone see the first hour from last week? Added footage was very cool.

Where the heck is Vincent? What happened to him? I hope Walt and he will be reunited...

Ok, so I loved this episode. But has anyone looked into Jeremy Bentham? If you google his name you get the history of a man in the 1800's that created a Prison where the prisoners never saw the guards, so since the prisoners always thought they were being watched they wouldn't do anything wrong. I don't know does this link to anything?

Anonymous said...

Amazing!
All the things I love about the show where in this episode.

Ben probably thought that it made sense to move the island even when all the mercenaries where dead (and the boat blown up) because Widmore still knew the exact position of the island. He could easily send a new boatload of armed men again.

About things going downhill on the island and the need to go back: I suspect Charlotte is the evil force behind that. I have no firm reasons for that, just a hunch. She could be a non-aging character like Alpert, once shunned from the native island community but now finally back with a vengeance.

Thank you for all the great Lost-blogging! I hope you keep it up (and I know you will ;-)

Now begins the very much too long wait for next season.

Loved it, had goosebumps in the end...Locke in the coffin made me think of something I had thought about earlier: the Island always reminded me of Avalon, the invisible island where the dying/deadKing Arthur was taken to. Hhmm, now Locke needs to be taken back. Interesting...

Anonymous said...

re: Jeremy Bentham. He is one of the greatest british philosophers and legal scholars ever. Founder of utilitarianism (compare: Ben's talk about "the greater good...") and very influential in many academic fields. There are also many myths surrounding him. His skeleton is still on display at UCL in an "autoicon" in line with Benthams detailed instructions prior to his death.
Google "Bentham-Project" for details (I can't post the direct link to the page for some reason)

All that said, Bentham MIGHT also be just yet another philosopher reference thrown in by the writers without much meaning for the storyline. After all, if Locke was travelling from the island to the outside world, then he'd need to travel under some other name.

Anonymous said...

Mind blowing episode. Amazing.

About Locke's death..."they said it was a suicide." I'm thinking as the new leader he is able to time travel, needs a fake name like Ben did (all his fake passports) and was murdered?

I can't wrap my mind around this yet.

I was thinking Jin was still alive and perhaps got picked up by Faraday's boat (we didn't see what happened to him and the people he was en route with)....Sun feels he is still alive and pairs up with Widmore to find the island and get Jin back.

smacky said...

I now have an image of Ben and Jack riding around in Jack's jeep, with dead Locke in the back (Weekend at Bernie's?) going to pick up crazy Hurley and assassin Sayid before swinging by Kate's to convince her to bring Aaron and come with them (a drug addict, a crazy person, an assassin, a manipulative freak, and a dead man) back to the island, then convincing Sun to return as well... should be very interesting.

What would make Sun return, except the promise that Jin might be alive? Unless she comes as a Widmore spy to get revenge on Jack and Ben for killing Jin. Sun is now a major player in the "game" with her money, power, and desire for revenge.

I am also glad Sawyer and Juliet are alive!

Anonymous said...

with all the talk of "the kiss", who ever guessed it would be between Des and Penny?

Anonymous said...

I am still not convinced Jin is Dead. Remember it is Lost and anything is possible. Everybody made some excellent comments. I think Sawyer and Juliet are the next to hook up.

also where is Bernard and Rose? They showed plenty of extras getting on the boat. I dont remember seeing Rose and Bernard.

Anonymous said...

Loved this episode! I'm not convinced that Jin is dead... I'm holding out for him appearing in the last season :) Also loving the Charlotte on the island before thing... maybe she and Alpert are true loves and Ben is her grandson heheh. And lastly, I'm not convinced that Sun is working WITH Widmore, against anyone, she had that smirky Ben look as she was walking away... I'm smelling an elaborate long con.

Rebecca said...

I'm still a little "akldjfklsj" o_o after that episode. OMG, it was awesome. I get why Ben had to move the island though the boat-like steering wheel turned on it's side seemed like an odd way to do that. I was sad for him that he couldn't go back to the island. Maybe next season we'll get convo between Locke & Alpert and learn about the island that way? Charlotte was on the island before??? How would Ben not know that? If Jin is alive but the island is gone how would they get him back to the island since they all have to go back? What about Daniel and his boat? I like the idea of the people being 'moved' too. Was anyone else waiting for the sky to turn purple or for the island to hover above the ocean and fly away? Sawyer getting off the chopper to save Kate, Aaron and the rest was one of my favorite moments. When Kate goes back to the island I want her & Sawyer together, raising little Aaron - unless Claire's alive. The Des & Penny reunion was a nice surprise but also makes sense as far as the story goes, who else would help them with their cover story? Too much to wrap my mind around.

Anonymous said...

hah I just signed up for the Octogon Global Recruiting- we'll see if I get recruited. Well if they are starting a new research group as a continuation of the Dharma group then whoever is in charge must know where the island is. How else would they be able to further the research of the Dharma group. Or Octagon Global has no relevance to the story line and they just threw that in there for fun

Jana said...

My gut reaction was that Charlotte is Ben and Annie's daughter. I don't know why.

We still don't know if Claire is dead because she appeared to Kate in a dream. All the other dead people are walking around like regular people during waking hours. (Except that tree-chopping guy, but we knew he was dead before we saw him).

Loved Christian showing up to say, "You can go now, Michael." ---KABOOM!

Locke surely has gone to Sun in the present and told her about Ben killing Keamy. That's why she and Widmore have a common goal.

I can't wait to go back and watch this three or four more times at least!!

Unknown said...

Did you notice the weird phone call Kate got in her dream? Lostpedia says when played backwards, the message states: "The Island needs you. You have to go back before it's too late."

Jana said...

Randy - I knew it was backwards, but obviously couldn't understand it - thanks!

Does the fact that it's playing backwards combined with Claire's message means Kate's supposed to do the opposite? ;)

Unknown said...

Just thought of something. Thing we know: Christian is not Jacob. Christian and Claire are BFF. When the O6 left the island , things fell apart. Ben/Locke (Team Island) is/was trying to get everyone back to the island to save it. Yet Claire tells Kate not to come back (specifically not to bring Aaron.) This is counterintuitive to the island calling and saying you have to go back. Could Christian/Claire not be associated with the Island/Jacob and are actually malevolent entities.

This could be why Christian appeared to Locke, Ben would have known that he was not Jacob and would not have done what he said. Ben only followed because Locke said it was Jacob's word.

Wow. I might be getting carried away and starting to sound like somebody's "deeper meaning guesses".

Great episode!! And I can't wait for Brian's full analysis.

Kim said...

Rose and Bernard stayed on the island. They didn't want to get off, since it cured Rose's cancer.

Anonymous said...

Bernard??? Rose???
Anyone?????

Anonymous said...

Randy, I actually had the same thought. I wondered why Locke led Ben to believe that he had spoken to Jacob, when I think Christian even told Locke specifically that he was not Jacob. Locke would probably not want to admit to Ben that he did not get the "real thing" in the form of Jacob on his visit, since that would compromise the impression that Locke is completely ready (worthy) to take Ben's place. Locke's ego getting in the way once again, just like any tragic hero. I wonder if Ben knows that Locke is going to fail/fall in his new position, with his clear lack of confidence. I wonder what Christian's ultimate motivation is, too.

Anonymous said...

My theory: Charlotte was born to the Dharmites... perhaps the last naturally born child on the Island before the Purge. I could see her becoming the new 'antagonist', though I believe Ben is basically evil and Widmore is basically good, but capitalistic.

Also, Locke as Bentham visited Sun (and the rest of the off-island survivors to bring them all home). He told Sun that Ben killed Keamy knowing the freighters and the survivors there would be killed.

Anonymous said...

I think Locke being on the mainland is as simple as the explanations for Ben -- he had the ability to travel and did so when that was required for "Island Business". I don't think anything was said that implied that he had been banished or anything.

I'm starting to wonder if Sun will become one of the bad guys.

Anonymous said...

Just a note, I read the spoilers this year, and while accurate, they left out a lot of awesome stuff! They only thing they mentioned was the frozen donkey wheel(the code name for the final scene.. literally). Locke in the Coffin, Sawyer jumps from the copter, and the freigher blows up. Of that, only the donkey wheel was a surprise and again, it's been what they've been calling it all season in the podcasts, but we took it as another silly name.

Saywer now going was a given, so was the frieghter blowing up.. and the way they were talking throughout the episode, bentham could only be Locke or Ben, and when you saw Ben.. who else could it be?

Other notes: Claire in Kates dream... that contradicts the other 'visions'. It was suggested that Widmore was on the island before. Is it possible that he could have been the other leader before Ben? and was teleported off just like ben?

Maybe he was kicked off due to being 'bad'... either way, like the red head girl(can't think of her name), he was once on the island too.

Third.. how could the island allow locke to die, unless it did this in order to unite the O6 into returning?

Anonymous said...

There was someone on the boat that kind of looked like a korean guy, I paused it, but I don't think it was Jin.

Anonymous said...

First time writer, long time reader.

So, I don't know if this has been said before, but I'm starting to believe the island is actually Shamballa. With everything going on, it almost makes sense that's what it is. Could very well be wrong, but that's where i'm leaning currently.

What if the Locke in the coffin is a duplicate? Like the number 15 bunny? Sent over to the mainland to get the Oceanic 6 back?

Was thinking of something after talking to a friend about the epi. Say Jin is alive (could have been blown off the freighter but not blown up) got on some wreckage & floated/swam to the island (island and bubble were moved taking Faraday & Jin with). What if Bentham/Locke visits Sun and tells her that her husband is alive & well and she needs to return to the island? Finding the island could be the common interest she has with Widmore - getting rid of Ben could be an extra bonus for her.

Anonymous said...

Saywer must have whispered into Kate's ear to tell his daughter something. Saywer has proven himself, in past few episodes, to be a true hero.

very poignant scene when he decides to jump and kisses Kate. very sad indeed too.

Anonymous said...

what about Miles? what does he know? why did he not want to leave? where is he now?

Anonymous said...

Oh where oh where is Rose and Bernard?????

Anonymous said...

Ben had to move the island becuase Widmore found it and Ben didn't want him to be able to get to it again.

Anonymous said...

The fight scene between Sayid and Keamy rocked! Sayid had the best of the guy but was lucky Richard and the calvary arrived to save the day.

Speaking of Richard, just a detail but why did his and Ben's relationship appear to be strained? I guess when they last saw each other, Richard questioned Ben's leadership in favor of Locke's.

Jeff said...

I believe the island will likely enhance Miles' already displayed physic abilities; perhaps this was realized as evident by his conversation with Charlotte and found the confrontation with Rose quite humorous.

There's a couple reasons hope may remain for Jin. The simple emotional reasoning is the send off did not seem worthy for a character of his stature. Michael received a nod from Christian and we knew of Michaels acceptance. Flashback's can always close open questions, but all we saw was Sun screaming for her husband without a final cut to Jin getting blown to smithereens. If you watch the explosion, it definitely originates from the bowels of the ship and projects towards the hull and stern; the former where Jin was last visible. One could argue he jumped, blown to sea by the propulsion of the blast without harm from shrapnel. As for the thought-out justification: Jin wouldn't out-swim a chopper flying at 20 knots; which missed landing prior to Ben moving the wheel and subsequently the island. I believe Jin and Faraday become a shared story line...perhaps Jin meets up with the raft left outside the island radius. And by the way, the zodiac raft only has five people on-board at the time of the island moving; not the magic number of six as mentioned a few episodes back. Why wouldn't they fill to capacity?

Speaking of Faraday....did anyone else find his behavior awfully strange? His discussions with Miles, Charlotte, Juliet...something was off, but can't quite figure it out.

Anonymous said...

So if all of them have to go back to the island, does that include Sun's baby since she was pregnant when she left?

Anonymous said...

If Ben et al need to bring everyone back to the island, including Locke's body, that raises the slight possibility that the 815 crashed in order to bring Christian's body there to become the new Jacob...and that Locke might go back and take his place. Or something. There are at least some parallels worth considering. (also then -- maybe jack/claire are adam/eve?)

Anonymous said...

im confuse... I dont understand why Ben move directly to the desert just after moving the island ( he hurt his harm when he fall from the ladder ) .... so he move the island and pooouuuufff he wake up in the desert in 2005 ?? how ?? ill have to see the timeline !

(sorry my english is not good... hope you understand me)

Anonymous said...

hey Jeff & Lourdes -- speaking of Faraday, could you make out his dialogue at the very final scene he was shot right before he boarded the raft? I agree, his behavior was very mysterious. What did he sense to indicate urgency to get off the island? Nothing was written or implied that i recall to indicate his actions.

Anonymous said...

and....someone else raised a good question related to Locke's meeting with Christian; not with Jacob. After leaving the cabin, did Locke reveal to Ben that Christian, not Jacob, gave him the instructions to move the Island?

Anonymous said...

What was up with Christian appearing to Michael before he died?

Unknown said...

You know what I think? I think you need to get rid of that countdown timer, because seeing "New Lost in just 250 days!" right after seeing that episode is too much to bear.

Also I'm a bit curious what Sawyer whispered to Kate.

Unknown said...

I'm very new here, so what are thoughts about the whole utilitarian end of things? Jeremy Bentham was certainly a utiliarian, as well as his contemparies David Hume (close to Desmond Hume) and Wm Godwin (can't remember Lost Godwin's first name). I can't see Ben working for the "greater good" all this time.

About Sun's takeover of daddy Paik's company, even with a settlement from Oceanic, she’d never have had enough to buy a majority on her own. There were 5 bank accounts that managed the takeover. I believe it was Sun, Jack, Kate, Sayid & Hurley (Aaron’s money would be held in trust for him, thus unavailable).

How can Kate even put up with Jack now? He's such a coward, and he totally let Sun down and caused Jin's (probable) death. Sawyer is so the man. What a hot hero!

This was an amazing 2 hours. Damn great writing, acting, everything!

Brian said...

I like the idea that Christian is somehow deceiving everyone and leading Locke in the wrong direction... but I have a feeling that's not actually what's going to happen.

Also, there's no way the copter could have re-landed back on the boat, picked up Jin and gotten away in time before the bomb blew, so I can't see Sun blaming Jack or calling him a coward. He doesn't become a coward until after they all get back home, when he can't stick by Kate and Aaron.

Anonymous said...

What about the farewell between Ben and Locke in the Orchid, when he passes on the torch? Ben apologizes to Locke and says, "I'm sorry I made your life so miserable." It made me think somehow that maybe Ben stole Locke's place on the island. He was like a false prophet or something.

The scene between Sun and widmore was very interesting! It continues to confirm my theory (mentioned a while ago on here) that Sun's father and Widmore are both after the island. Widmore definitely knows her father and does business with him. That's another/main reason Sun has a vengeance against him (in addition to him being the reason they were on the plane). Which makes sense why he was not present when she was giving birth in the Yi Jeon episode!

Anonymous said...

i really believe the storyline with Sun buying a majority of Paik Industries is a stretch. even if she somehow convinced the other O6 to contribute money (and why would they btw???), still hard to imagine how she'd have enuf funds to purchase a majority of the Company. How much could the Oceanic settlement have been for anyway? $5 Million (US) each? Paik Industries is portrayed as a very major Korean Company - possibly with a value far exceeding a measly $10's of millions of dollars.

Sawyer must have whispered into Kate's ear a favor requesting she find his daughter once home and tell her he was a hero or is sorry or something. Sawyer's life, since he killed the real Sawyer, was all about redemtion - he has transformed to become a true hero and no longer shown as a selfish guy. His storyline in the finale was quite good!!

Anonymous said...

the writting was impecable in so many ways. but one of the most striking was the backdrop to get Jack to believe that they must lie to the public. I never would have guessed that Jack would be the impetus behind O6 being distruthful to the public/media.

I wonder what Jack's other theory might have been related to "where the island went"? Hurley asked him but Jack never got a chance to answer.

This show represents some of the best, groundbreaking, imaginative, ambitious story-telling on network and/or cable TV. One of the best couple of hours of TV I can remember watching!! Great job C&L!!

Sun's definitely teaming up with Ben, who's using her as he's using Sayid: through their urge of revenge.

That's the only way she'd come up with so much money: It came from Ben.

I'm confused as to why Kate would get a phone call (supposedly saying that she needed to get back to the island) and then two seconds later get a visit by Claire that says she shouldn't bring Aaron back. If these are both missives from the Island, it sure is sending mixed messages.

singhy said...

Thanks for the analysis Brian, and a great episode although only the one huge surprise IMHO (Locke's eventual death). My feelings about your questions are:

1. Sun blames Ben for Jin's death, because he killed Keamy...she might well find out now Ben is back in the 'real world'. So Sun and Widmore could work together to find him.

2. Ben still had to move the island because the Freightors would have recorded the coordinates / Widmore would know the location even though Keamy was dead, as he sent them on their mission

Did anyone watch the reshowing of Part 1 with the new deleted scenes? Did I miss much and if so where I can catch it again? Thanks!

Anonymous said...

singhy - deleted scenes included more questions asked to O6 during the press conference.

Sawyer is the friggin man! The guy jumps from a helicopter from like 100 feet in the air into the ocean, swims like 5 miles back to the island, then proceeds to tell not one, but TWO jokes to the first person he sees! ROFL! I can just imagine him swimming, thinking that stuff up. I agree w/Brian, near perfection.

Anonymous said...

(about kates dream) I think it is rather simple, the island is the weird call telling her to bring Aaron back, and Claire is just an image of Kate's concious or concern to keep him safe. What would you imagine could be stronger than the mother saying keep the child away.

8daysawk said...

Has anyone else thought about Jack's father's name - Christian Shepard? Christian Shepard as in "Jesus Christ". An interesting choice don't you think?

MightyRauros said...

This episode confirmed my thoughts that Clair's opening dream from Season 1, Episode 10 "Raised By Another" is extremely significant to the show (creepy-eyed Lock telling her everyone must pay for her giving up Aaron). Somehow, someway, it's Aaron not being raised by Clair that is leading to the terrible things on the Island.

And, to get Sun to go with them, what about kidnapping Ji Yeon?

I am loving how the whole concept of the show has changed.

Anonymous said...

Here's my thinking on the end of the episode: Locke had to die. now that i look at it, the island was using Locke as a placeholder. it needed ben off the island (to protect the island/fight widmore/get the people back to the island), and a new temporary leader, Locke. So this leaves us with one of the original storylines: It really only needs Aaron. Aaron has to be the leader of the Others, protector of the Island. First child born there in how long?
But now there is a problem. Kate saw visions of Claire saying not to let Aaron go back. i feel like this is going to be a major storyline as season 5 unfolds....On to season 5!

Steve said...

Ben used travelling name. Apparently Jeremy Bentham, like John Locke were both enlish philosphers. Ben has many names!
Do that's right in character, my question is why would the island let him die?

I think Ben mistook what happened i the cabin and a passing of the torch. Jacob asked Locke through Christian to move the island, not to take control of the others. Johns purpose on the island was the move the island, but he didn't do it, Ben did.

Just some thoughts.

Anyone have any theories on Walt's story? He and Michael certainly must have been listed among the people on board flight 815, right? So, when Walt "reappeared" back in society after being released by the Others, how was that explained? Has he been living with his Grandmother under a different name? If so, then why would he ask Hurley "why are you all lying?" Because Walt would also be lying, wouldn't he?

Anonymous said...

excellent point Jennifer.

also, an audio-enhanced version of the scene when Sawyer whispers in Kate's ear is floating on U-Tube. He asks her to find his daughter in Alabama and tell her he said he's sorry.

Anonymous said...

ok, another theory, that kind of goes along with something someone said earlier-
what if bodies that are brought back to the island come back to life in a new and enlightened state? This would explain Christian Shepherd, and why John Locke's body has to be brought back.

Anonymous said...

Anon, given that theory on Christian, that would indicate that he had been on the island previously.

Can Ben really 'never' go back? Or is it just that whoever moves the wheel leaves and doesn't know HOW to get back.

During the finale, while locke was in the orchid and watching the video ben gave him, the asian scientist began to say that when the bunny is placed in the machine, it is moved through time a fraction of a second into the future. He then begins to say that it "doesn't disappear, it just..." and then the video begins to rewind. What I think he was going to say was that the bunny doesn't disapear, we just can not see it anymore because it is living a few seconds ahead of us, as if in a future dimension. So it didnt disappear, it was physically moved forward into our future. This reminds me somewhat of quantum physics theories, with different dimensions.
So this got me to thinking, what if Claire didn't just up and "disappear", what if she was somehow lead to the orchid and sent into the future similarly. That way no one can see her because she is stuck in a time ahead of everyone else. If she is somehow able to come back in time or allow others to communicate in this different dimenion, Kate's "dream" might have been claire communicating from this future dimension warning Kate not to bring aaron back to the island due to something that occurs in the future. I know that sounds stretching it, but I find it interesting!

I think that Sun is still good, and I feel like Whidmore is not necessarily bad. I even have a theory that whidmore started dharma initiative himself, that is why he knows about the island, and that is why he blamed ben for alecs death, because ben took over his initiative by killing everyone off, which eventually lead to the mess that got his daughter killed.

Also, did anyone note as Ben turned the old wheel thing, he was in an icy room, and as he began to turn the wheel, flames began to pour in from the other side. Very odd that they are direct opposites, which gets me to think did the island plop to the opposite side of the world? I cant wait to find out.

LOST's co-creators indicated that getting back to the Island will prove to be very difficult for the O6 and Ben. This may imply that many, if not most or even all of the episodes for next season may not show everyone united again on the Island.

Anonymous said...

I thought it was interesting that Walt told Hurley that Bentham came to see him and wanted him to ask Hurley why the O6 was lying. But Bentham was Locke, and he it was Locke's idea for lying! Walt also said that none of the O6 came to visit him, meaning that no one could have informed him that Locke is off the island using a fake name. That means someone else must know (maybe the guy who arranged Naomi's team) and whoever it is visited Walt using the name Bentham, and told Walt to find out from Hurley what really happened.

Unknown said...

I think Ben's lying. He says he hardly ever tells the truth! Why believe him now?

Very interesting, Tim Dunn, but how about this;

The island didn't disappear... it moved into the future...! Ahhhh

nah.

Couple theories for you to chew on:

I thnk Ben put all the metal in the time machine to destroy it. If his plan is to move the island so no one finds it, I think he might want to destroy the means for a someone off the island to transport to that room and thus locate the island. At a risk of sounding like a Trekkie, if the transporter room is destroyed, no one can "beam" themselves there.

Theory Two is somewhat far-fetched but still plausible, considering how unpredictable the writing is. I think the Black Rock was Widmore's ship back in the day-like waaay back in the day. I could see him as a pirate who ran aground and discovered the island's special properties. He was able to leave the island and now because he travels through time, he appears as the same age- like Richard Alpert.

Which leads me to another theory. Alpert doesn't age because he is also travelling through time and is trying to alter destiny (that fickle B-itch) by recruiting the likes of Locke right at birth and again in his pre-teens and teens.

Rich...it seems like Ben loaded the unit with inanimate objects to gain access to the donkey wheel. no idea why (or how), but seems like Ben knew that doing this would blow open a hole or opening for him to go thru to accomplish objective of moving the island which entailed turning the wheel.

Does anyone else think the island is Atlantis?

-the stone pillars and foot sculpture Sayid saw when boating around the island in season one
-the carvings on the door below Ben's house
-technology that is far ahead of its time
-now that we know the island can move, maybe this explains why Atlantis was in the Atlantic ocean, and then all of the sudden dissappeared

maybe they pioneered this technology and the darma initiative came around later trying to analyze it?

Given the extreme precision LOST's writting and direciton exhibits, nothing can be overlooked. That said, the explosion on the freighter was shown to originate at the ships' bow section. After a second or so, the explosion and fire migrated to the stern which is where Jin was running towards. The point here is that Jin may likely end up having survived the explosion and be shown, in a future episode, to have dove into the water later to be rescued by Daniel. If you think about it, would they kill off a significant character, such as Jin, so unceremoniously and without actually showing viewers his peril? I think not. My bet is that Jin is alive and well somewhere with Daniel, et al.

ooops, i meant the explosion originated in the ships' stern and migrated towards the bow.

Brian I would love it if you had an RSS feed here.
I'm sure I'm not the only person constantly checking for updates. :P

I just rewatched the episode.

Could anyone out there watch Sun freaking out on the helicopter and not cry a little?

Her grief was INTENSE.

Does anyone else think they might have actually used polar-bears to turn the wheel and move the island in ancient times and that's how they found a polar bear in the desert?

Brian said...

victorc - I think I do have an RSS feed. Someone requested it years ago, and I think I set it up. I'm not exactly sure how all this stuff works, but I know I used a Google Reader yesterday and just typed in the Blog web address and it showed up.

Is that right?

PS - the Analysis post is forthcoming. Just taking a while to work through some pesky details in my head, currently the death and resurrection of John Locke. Once I get it all sorted out, I'll post away!

confused!

So Locke wanted everyone to go back, but Claire appeared to Kate in a dream telling her NOT to take him back. But the last time we saw Claire, she was with Christian/Island Spirit/Good Friend of Jacob.

SO if Locke and Jacob are on the same side, then why would Claire tell Kate not to take Aaron. Unless Claire's concern is motherly in nature--but she sure didn't show any of that in the cabin.

Also, I figured that it wasn't Ben in the coffin, but I couldn't figure out who it would be. There were just too many reasons why it would be Ben; it would have been too obvious. And in the finale when they called him Bentham, I knew it was a red herring because they are never THAT obvious. TOO MUCH to think about.

Anonymous said...

yes, the issued and questions with Claire are curious ones. Agreed that in the cabin, she reflected no concern about Aaron. When Locke asked "where is Aaron?", Christian Shepard replied "he is where he should be". It has been revealed, time and again by the co-creators, that the character of Aaron will play a pivotal part in the story and overall mythology. Clair appearing to Kate seems to defy anything we'd expect from Clair given whatever we already know or can reasonably assume. Brian...hopefully you can wrap your brain around this entire story line and give us the benefit of your anaylsys.

When Christian said that Aaron was "where he should be," wasn't he still with Sawyer in the jungle?

TheycallmeVic said...

Brian, you're right, the RSS worked.
Thanks.

Suzzane - yes, that's exactly where he was. no doubt the imagry was clear and powerful with Sawyer holding Aron, perhaps for one of the only times in LOST history, carrying him thru the woods. The writters are trying to tell us something here.

Regarding Sun having enough money to buy the company... What if Hurley gave her his lottery winnings? At the press conference, Hurley says he doesn't want it when asked about getting his money back.

Anonymous said...

i wonder if the writters will ever even address the issue of Sun financing the acquisition of a "marjority" portion of her fathers' business. if so, you have a good idea of her garnering $ from Hurley plus her settlement $.

Unknown said...

First of all, Nijo: That's awesome. Plausible or not, it's a pretty cool mental picture.

And secondly, I wish people would drop the "Jin is alive" and "Sun couldn't have bought those controlling shares by herself" theories. For the first: The show has given us every reason to believe Jin is dead, save for actually showing his body burning up (which is something nobody wants). They even used the fact that he died as a twist ending in an episode, and to then twist right back and say "oh but he's actually alive now!" would be confusing at best, and emotional backstabbing at worst. It's a well-established "rule" that surprise revelations stay true--not because everyone agrees to follow it, but because if you disobey, then the viewers no longer know what to trust, and they lose interest. Jin is dead, so you shouldn't try to convince yourself he isn't. To make him alive again would serve no purpose other than placating those fans who were attracted to him--and if there's one thing I'd hate, it's for Lost to turn into a soap opera.
For the second: Sun got an unspecified "large" amount of money from the settlement. There's no reason to believe that this amount wasn't as big as the unspecified "large" amount that it would take to buy a controlling stake in her father's company. There's no reason to make it any more complicated.

I think having Jin be alive and be picked up by Faraday would make for one hell of a storyline. He's not dead, in fact im sure he is returning next season.

I know! What's taking so long? I was going to be so proud of myself by getting the analysis up within a week of the episode airing - since usually finale analyses take me more like a month.

But now I've missed that target. The post will be up by Wednesday.

I promise!

Guys, I don't know who has seen this yet, but it's about as spoiler-ish as casting news can get, I imagine

Apparently someone, a female, who has been a part of the main cast since day one will no longer be a regular during Season 5, but will return in Season 6. I am guessing that this means we won't be getting any closure to Claire's storyline until Season 6.

Anonymous said...

Did anyone notice that when Claire appeared to Kate she had a strong north american accent (as opposed to her usual Aussie strine).
Think we need to note this - nothing is an accident - perhaps it was a bad spirit disguising itself as Claire - but what this all means - who knows...

Rebecca said...

Hurley gave his lottery winnings to his parents. His dad mentioned that he fixed the car before Hurley gave them the money. Also I think that if Jin were alive it wouldn't be going against any revelation. The first show that had a twist with him being 'dead' only revealed that he didn't make it off the island - we know he didn't die the day of the plane crash so we can't really trust the gravestone. I do think that Sun believes he is dead, hopefully we'll find out next season.

By the way, was anyone else waiting all season for Patchy to show up, I guess he did finally die in season three finale.

Anonymous said...

with respect to Jin's potential death, I agree that it would not be a cheap plot trick for the writters NOT to have killed him off in the freighter explosion. to many clues point to the idea that he may have survived. IMO, Jin's character "arc" could go either way!

Anonymous said...

Could someone please list just one of these potential "clues" pointing to the fact that Jin is alive? Because I do not see one, and, frankly, I think the whole lot of you is insane.

Anonymous said...

not so much "clues" but consider the following:

-Jin was killed off somewhat uncerimoniously. Not suggesting they show any gory scene but there was nothing shown (as with Michael and Christian) to imply or prove he was killed.

-it was shown that the explosion originated in the ships' mid-section. Jin was in the ships' bow and could have jumped into the ocean before the explosion.

-Daniel Dae Kim was signed for seasons 5 & 6. This could easily be for flashback purposes but it has widly been reported that flashforwards, not flashbacks, will be the regular.

Unknown said...

For the first: Plenty of ceremony. The whole end of "Ji Yeon" was ceremony twoards it, and Sun was screaming at the end of this episode... as I said before, the only thing more they could have done was to show his body exploding, and nobody wants that.

For the second: Jumping away from explosions only works in Hollywood action movies, and only for the effect--thus it doesn't work on action that happens offscreen. :P

For the third: That's quite plausible.

I still think he's dead, but it mystifies me that so many people disagree. We'll just have to wait and see. But if I'm right, you all owe me a Coke. :P

Yeh so Desmond and Penny are reunited but now he's off the island I reflect on what Mrs Hawking said to Desmond that he had to turn the failsafe key otherwise ‘everyone of us is dead'– so far we know that turning the key caused the glitch for Penny to find him but how has that ensured that everyone is not dead? Widmore’s team was stopped from torching the island? O6 escaped? And therefore the world was saved because....???

If BEN didn't kill Locke, then he at least knew it was going to happen. Some time a while ago he said that he always had a plan... I'm not sure but there was something fishy about Ben just "handing over" his crew of Others to Locke just like that... it doesn't seem consistent that the same trickly little rat of seasons 2,3 and 4 would give up his ownership of the island, even if it were for the sake of the island, unless it were all part of a plan. No, if he didn't have a plan then what he would have done was tricked Locke into believing he was the one who needed to move the island...or something ratty like that.

... I don't like Ben ;]

"At any rate, the storyline is going to struggle on Kate’s internal struggle to determine what she should be doing with her adoptive child."

Aaron IS NOT Kate's adoptive child. Kate NEVER ADOPTED Aaron. She PRETENDED to be his mother. She is LIVING A LIE as Aaron's mother.

Goddammit! Why can't anyone get this straight? I get tired of people pretending or making excuses for the lie that the Oceanic Six has perputrated about Aaron.
